April 13, 2005 at 9:05 pmI think you are really being too hard on Steven with this one. If you are going to quote him, at least give the quote justice – “24p is highly overrated anyway. I agree they should fix the problem if they can. But there are other issues that have been addressed and are working just fine. Like HDV.”
Steven, like all of the rest of us, wants to get the most out of our product as possible. This 24p bug has been sent to Adobe numerous times by everyone and I agree, Adobe should release a fix for it, but maybe they can’t figure it out yet? Maybe they don’t want to release a 1/2 @$$ed fix. This is the same reason why Avid will not support HDV until the summer. They wanted to get the cameras, TEST the software and make sure everything works before it was released. Thankfully, according to many people, PPro 1.5 can handle HDV just fine with the proper plugins.
As for 24p, MANY software applications do not properly support 24p yet. For some reason, it has been bugging them for a long time. The results aren’t prefect and there are issues that need to be worked out with 24p. Maybe the issues lie in the structure of the file setting itself, maybe they are part of the codec, maybe they are related to the NLE. Whatever the case might be, PPro at this current moment does not “properly” support 24p on many user systems. I personally think that if you want to edit 24p footage, PPro is not the NLE system to be using. I’ve read too many complaints about the results. Until the kinks are worked out, I would use another NLE for 24p.
But getting back to my original questions…
will PPro ever support the DVCPRO 25, DVCPRO 50, and DVCPRO 100 (DVCPRO HD) codecs? will PPro be able to read the files from a P2 card and edit them natively? -

April 13, 2005 at 11:02 pmI find it funny how people who don’t use the 24P feature, get upset when people who do use it, aren’t happy with PPRO’s functionality with it. If it wasn’t a big issue, why is there a 200+ post(4 times larger than any other topic) on Adobe’s forum? The reason is that many people are upset about it, and its the only way to voice their opinion, THAT’S WHAT A FORUM’S FOR. Because they’ve already sent emails, letters, bug reports with no effect.

April 14, 2005 at 6:56 amI love the Panasonic 24P mode, and I think that when HDV gets that worked out, it’ll be great. I just did a couple probects with the SONY HDV and used P.Pro 1.5.1 and aspech HD, and outputted them, and they looked wonderful. I also just did a 6 mnute industrial promo for a spa manufacturer on my Pansonic dvx100a in 24p mode. I usually run the 24P stuff through my dpsVelocity, which handles it extremely well. But I felt, what the hell, I’d cut it in Premiere Pro and see how it goes. At first I had some problems and posted some things, but I don’t think anyone understood it. For one, I couldn’t get a strange flicker to settle down, but when I tried it again, being careful about setting up the projects etc., it went It ended up looking great. The producer was extremely happy with the output. So I’m not sure what the 24P problem is in P.Pro is right now.
I’m now holding off buying the SONY HDV camera and waiting to see what Panasonic will do. If it has a 24P mode and does HD, even if it’s DVCPRO HD, I’d be tempted to move on to that codec. I hope P.Pro can handle it becasue I prefer cutting in P.Pro than Final Cut Pro.

April 14, 2005 at 10:53 pmI would expect the camera to work just fine with PPro 1.5, though you may need a plug-in for the DVCPRO formats (Main Concept makes one. I’m sure there are others).
Rumors on the camera abound both here and elsewhere. It’s probably easiest at this point to relax and wait for the press release from NAB. It’s going to be months before the camera reaches the real world, and then I’d want to wait for my local Panasonic dealer to get one I can have some hands-on time with before I made any decisions.
