Pan is always -1
Posted by Ben Northenor on January 27, 2010 at 10:23 pmWhenever I bring footage down to my timeline, the audio is always -1 Pan. Why is this. I have to click on every piece of audio and fix it and it’s a pain. Thanks in advance.

January 27, 2010 at 10:32 pmType “Stereo/Mono control” in the search feature of the online manual. You know how to call up the online manual, don’t you?

January 27, 2010 at 10:40 pmWhen you look at a STEREO PAIR (in the viewer), a -1 in the pan field means the upper track is panned full left and the lower track is panned full right. If you look at an INDIVIDUAL track (in the viewer or audio mixer, for examples), -1 will mean panned full left and +1 will mean panned full right. Is this not what you’re hearing?

January 27, 2010 at 10:49 pmNo, It plays on both speakers. Even if it’s a single track of audio, it is always -1 Pan. I can’t bring in any audio and where the Level and Pan are both 0.

January 28, 2010 at 2:45 amThank you, David and Phillip. Like Ben, I also noticed the “Pan -1” setting but didn’t understand it. And, like him, I was concerned that I had a problem.
At your urging, I just opened up my FCP 6 hardcopy manual (Volume III, page 119) and read all about panning audio in FCP. Now, I fully understand. I guess this thick stack of manuals is actually worth something. 🙂
Thanks, guys, for being generous with your time and knowledge.

January 28, 2010 at 4:06 pmYou might want to look at the audio controls right ther in the menus and take note of the panning keyboard shortcuts. Anyway -1 is stereo. 0 is dual mono. +1 is reverse stereo.
