i saw this really good vh1 special the other day and it used tons of pan and zoom and rotate effects. It was mostly of still images of celebrities.

my question is this… it was an hour long show, so i imagine it was not done in after effects because every 5 seconds a pan zoom rotate glow effect was occuring.

i have never tried this type of effect in avid yet and need guidance.

how do you do this in Avid without the images lookingn crappy when zoomed in? seems like avid always imports images to fit its composer screen not matter the original size.

for example, if i have an image that is 4000 pixels wide and 300 dpi, how can i preserve that when using avid for my pan and zooms? so i can zoom in a lot and not lose quality? does avid disregard it or know that it is great quality and allows you to zoom in close without pixelazation?

thanks for you help. i am doing a project that requires this ken burns effect on acid type of thing and would love your advice on achieving it.

Several options. The built in Pan & Zoom allows you to do Pans and Zooms using your original stiil as the source protecting quality. The good news is, it’s free, the bad news is, it doesn’t do rotate.

Next is Moving Picture from http://www.stagetools.com. It adds rotate functionality and a few other niceties.

The next step after that would be something like Boris Red from http://www.borisfx.com. This would let you do all the moves, and glows etc to your original still. It’s like having After Effects built into your Avid.

There’s no specific effect in Boris Red that does this. You do this directly from the interface & set up the parameters yourself manually.

Sorry, I thought that was specific.

Ok… a simple scenario using Boris Red as a plugin in Avid:

Create a place holder (I got in the habit of just importing the pic, low rez, in Avid & using that) in your Avid timeline using either a clip or whatever & make it the length you need.

Drop the Boris Red “1 input” onto the place holder you just created & get to the Red interface from Avid’s Effect palette.

Once in Red, it defaults to whatever was in your placeholder in Avid. You have to load the hi-rez pic. Where it says V1 in yellow, click that & you’ll see the different kinds of media you can select. Choose “still image”.

Once you have your image loaded, you have at your disposal:
The Controls Window. There’s scale, X Y Z Position, Rotate, Spin, Tumble.

Once you get the hang of it, it’s a “shootin’ fish in a barrel” kind of thing.

    Good luck
    Bill
