Pan and crop issue
HI,
When I crop HD video I often get lines through the footage wherever there is movement once I have rendered it. It seems to get worse with each subsequent render. I am using Pro 10e. Is there a way I can fix this? My project is an hour long with crops in a few 10 sec grabs. I am self taught so can I have an easy to understand explanation if possible.

It sounds like you have an interlacing problem. Is your source interlaced? (it sounds like it is). Is your project set up for interlaced footage? More importantly, what do you have your Deinterlace Method set to in your project properties? It sounds like you may have incorrectly set it to “None”.

Yea, if you are working with interlaced video, you should never, ever select “None” as the deinterlace method.

I have no idea what interlaced and deinterlaced means – i guess I should do some google searching and background reading 🙂
But at least it is set right now.
I am so glad I have found this forum – I’m going to learn a lot and get my many questions answered!

Wikipedia is a good source for stuff like this. In short, interlacing was used in early Television broadcasts to overcome limitations in technology and it never went away even though there is no need for it anymore. What happens is a single frame gets split into odd and even fields for transmission. The act of deinterlacing brings these separate fields back together to create a complete frame. Vegas needs to know if a frame is composed of fields so that it can correctly process it. When you set the deinterlace method to “none” you turned this processing off which is why your interlaced footage didn’t look correct when cropped.
