PAL Widescreen question – After Effects

I’ve just switched over from using Flash for some DVD projects I’ve been working on (reached the limits that Flash can go for his project). My background is in design and flash development not video editing, hence the probably really basic question.
The movie is to be output to DVD for use on widescreen PAL. In after effects I’ve used the ‘Pal D1/DV widescreen 720×576’ comp. On my monitor this looks condensed and I know this is because my screen uses square pixels, but even if I export my movie to a quicktime file, the movie still looks standard rather than widescreen, is this correct? Reason for asking is that I’ve extracted some clips from DVD footage and that looks widescreen when I play it back in quicktime. I’ll be supplying the exported .mov file to a third party who will be producing the DVDs.
Finally, the client who will be approving the project will make a comment that the movie looks condensed when checking on my monitor, is there a way around this?

Just like Dave said – on footage complying to the DVD specs (720×576 for PAL) you will not see proper widescreen interpretation when the file is played in QT as the overall pixels are the same like on 3:4 footage. Your other footage has probably been un-squeezed by whatever tool you use, which is less than ideal. You should try to extract the footage at its native resolution. For your client review, just go the other way around – render 1024×576 and he will be able to properly view it.
