We are in Europe. We’r going to buy Panasonic HVX200 to shoot HD. Here in Europe it is really difficult to get price under 6000 euro (about $7600) No PAL version on USA stock. Cheapest NTSC camera is about $4000. Huge price difference.

Do we really depend on PAL if we shoot HD, 24 and we going to produce it for NTSC and PAL market. Again we do not going to use DV format at all. Is it ok if we here in Europe will use NTSC camera.

    Thank you, Andrew

One issue you may run into is flickering of certain lights because they are on 50 cycles rather than the 60 in North America. And you’ll be looking at more downconversions but in general it’s not a deal breaker for most productions.

    thank you, Noah.

    further questions:

    — is it problem to convert NTSC HD footage to PAL HD and is it necessary at all?

    — what is the best or most used format to put HD to DVD? is it BlueRay or HDDVD. Is it problem to play NTSC HD on PAL HDDVD set-top player. Is there any HD set-top on the market?

Well first of all there is no such thing as PAL and NTSC in the HD world- it’s more a question of frame rate and downconversion to standard definition. BluRay vs. HDDVD is a- a subjective question b- a moot point as there are not burners or players widely available for both yet.

    ok, thank you again.

    — What problem i could meet because of frame rate difference?

    — what is better to downconvert to SD format. we need it both NTSC and PAL DVDs at the end.

25p vs. 24p 60i vs. 50i. etc. Way more tech details here:

The PAL or NTSC models of the HVX would make arguably equivalent NTSC and PAL downcoverts. But again you’d be dealing with a frame rate convert for one or the other. I’d recommend the Nattress plugins to handle this:

Like I said- in my opinion they are about equal because the HD source is very high quality.

    Hi,

Your assumption that the NTSC camera is around $4000, is flawed. Those companies that offer it for that are only advertising it for that price to get you to call them, then once they have you, they will sell you the battery, the power supply and all of the things that normally come with it at a premium. Then they will tack on a bunch of useless accessories, like wide angle converters that vignette and such. No the legitimate units here are going for about $5500-5600. Much under that and there is something wrong. Under $5000, walk away as fast as you can because you are getting scammed, you won’t know it until you have the camera and your credit card bill a month later.

    Hope this helps,
