    Hi

i have a bunch of DV25 anamorphic PAL 25fps stock footage i have to integrate into an DV50
NTSC anamorphic program. I really want to avoid the “smearing” or “frame judder hiccup” that comes from a straight standards conversion, so I want to do it this way:

slow the pal at 25 fps to either 24 fps or 23.98 fps EXACTLY

take the 24fps and pull it Down to 30 such that it will look like a film to tape xfer.

wahts the easiest way to do this? can i drop my 25 onto a 24 fps timeline in fcp, and speed it up the right percentage, then export that to 30 with 3:2 added? I have tried that already, but i am not sure waht i am actually getting.

I appreciate you guys humoring me on this.

“I like video because its so fast!”

    Bob,

I would suggest that you contact Graeme Nattress about this and find out from him if you are barking up the right tree and/or if any of his conversion filters can do what you want or possibly do it even better. I’d say Graeme knows more about frame rate conversions and the things going on behind the scenes inside FCP than anyone. You can contact him at graeme@nattress.com.

    Thanks David!

Yes, you can de-interlace, then add 3:2 pulldown. To deinterlace, pick your favourite. I use the G Smart Deinterlace from Film Effects.

I’d export that out as a movie, then take to cinema tools, to slow from 25p to 23.98fps via conform. To get 3:2 pulldown, you’ve got to either play out to tape, or I’d use G Film Converter which adds 3:2 as a render process. Works great.

Do i de-interlace if its 25P, which it might be? or just “cinema tools conform” then do the rest?

If it’s 25p with no interlacing, there’s no need to deinterlace. Just head to Cinema Tools.

It Works!!! Awesome! no smear, no juddddder, the footage looks like film, which will cut seamlessly with the 30 p stuff that we shot!!

as Inspector Gadget would say: WOWSERS!

    thanx again!
