  • PAL tape in an NTSC project?

I’m working on a long form doc in FCP, using an HDV1080i 23.97 preset. I have a Blackmagic Decklink HD card for I/O. My client supplied me with 2 PAL VHS tapes and a PAL VHS player to use for input. The deck has component outputs which I have patched into the Balckmagic RGB inputs — the Decklink setting is for SDI + RGB. In the capture window I’ve selected Blackmagic PAL 8 bit for the capture codec. I’m getting audio but no video —

Question – I’ve never worked with PAL before and I’m trying to figure out –
    1) Is this possible, and if it is…
    2) what am I doing wrong?

    No.

Send the tape to a dub house and get it converted.

I would recommend the Nattress standards conversion plug in if you were doing SD, but you also need to upconvert to 1080i. Best to get it done with the proper hardware.

I agree. UPCONVERTING and CONVERTING from PAL to NTSC. YOu gotta find a post facility with a standards converter and a Terranex. Only way it will look decent.

I had the same issue with PAL VHS and PAL DV for use in a DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 project. We took it out of house and had it done.

    Shane –

Thanks for the input but I’m still in the “off-line” stage – the producer wants to see if the content warrants the cost of PAL/NTSC up and cross conversion – it doesn’t matter what it looks like for now, just so that I can work with it on a timeline. I’m just asking if what I’m trying to do is possible (i’ve never tried working with PAL in an NTSC timeline before.)And if it is possible then what am I doing wrong at the capture stage?

You need to capture it as PAL…use the PAL DV setting. When you drop the clip onto the timeline, you’ll have to scale it up to fit, and render….and it will look a little jerky, but it will work well enough for viewing in a rough cut. Then you go back and upconvert and standards convert when you get your short list of shots used in the cut.

Ah, but he needs to go to 23.98fps, so….

Bring in PAL DV as PAL DV. Deinterlace with a high quality deinterlacer, take to cinema tools. Hit “conform” to 23.98fps. Place on FCP timeline and scale up to 1080. Done.

I’d make sure FCP is set to high quality motion for it’s improved scaling. End image should look very good indeed.
