PAL & NTSC Video
Hello. I am going to be shooting video in Italy, which is different for me since I am from the USA. I would like this video to be able to be played in Italy, US, and possible some different areas. If the final delivery format is DVD, would it be best to shoot in PAL and convert to NTSC or shoot in NTSC and convert to PAL? I will be using a Nikon D7000 to shoot and usually shoot at 24 fps, but could shoot at 30 fps. I will also be using Final Cut Pro to edit and DVDSP to burn the DVD. I would greatly appreciate any advise, since this will be my first time shooting video outside the USA.

It think you continue to shoot 24p. Then the transfers to PAL will look much the same as the transfers to NTSC…

Thank you for the information. I know the conversion from NTSC to PAL can be done with compressor, but is seems to look pixelated when I do the conversion. Is there a way to use compressor and have a nice looking PAL file?

24p isn’t NTSC… you’ll be doing a 24p or 29.97 with pulldown added and a PAL version from 24p… not from 29.97… it will look just as good as you can shoot.

most dvd players will play both PAL and NTSC. Certainly here in the UK our PAL DVD players play NTSC too. Might just be worth shooting how you usually do. Maybe take an NTSC dvd out to italy withyou and see if it plays in a DVD player there?cheers

Nick’s got a good point: often Europeans can play a NTSC disc.
Also “NTSC Film” is 24 fps, and is one of the formats which is part of the DVD spec. So shooting 24 fps is an excellent idea. In NTSC Film, there will be no frame rate conversion, and in PAL (the DVD spec only allows PAL to be 25 fps) there will be the smallest pulldown.

Good point, Nick. I suppose it’s really only broadcast that will want the 25fps.
But there’s that difference in the number of lines. PAL’s larger. ‘nother 100 scan lines in fact. So for the best you’d want to take HD to PAL directly for PAL consumption I’d put out.. eh? PAL is better color than NTSC too; hands down better. So makes sense to me to make the PAL streams from the HD. HD sizes are the same thank heavens between PAL countries and NTSC countries.
Hollywood movies are shot 24fps and they translate beautifully to PAL frame rates and countries. The US’s number one export in dollars is entertainment. Don’t the major’s always release in a 25 or 50fps master in the EU? They should if they don’t I’d think. especially if going to SD DVD’s.

not all dvd players in europe will play NTSC.
Many machines have cracks that will allow multiple regional discs to play…but it probably wont work on a Sony dvd player. They seem to have locked their machines to play only one region.

I think that used to be true a few years ago , but now every machine i use plays NTSC and PAL, even my Sony consumer DVDcheers

mine doesn’t!
and you can’t guarantee that everyone will have the very latest machines either. Just something that the OP needs to be aware of.
