PAL Digitising settings for standard definition: 768 by 576 or 720 by 768?
I am UK based and have been successfully using a pair of Media 100 on G4s for several years now. Most of my legacy projects have been digitised in using component input at 576 x 768 (PAL) from, depending on the project, Beta SP, Digi Beta and DVCAM. (I have a DVCAM DSR 45 deck which has component input/output).
I have been happy to stick with the 768 format as it gives excellent picture quality and has caused no technical problems. The arrival of the SW version which I am using in the much faster G5 environment is a big plus to productivity. However if I am right in standard definition it only works with 720 x 576. It reads in 768 media okay but only exports in 720. If I need to go back to a project originally created on the G4 created in 768 x 576 it does not seem to appear to be able to read the media. (I am talking about hard exported QuickTime files not Referenced files)
Any suggestions appreciated.
My guess is form here on you would recommend working in 720 by 576?

I definitely would recommend working in 720*576. All digital formats (DV, SDI, DVD) use this resolution, so it has been the “standard” for quite some time. The only problem is that you cannot mix 720 and 768 media in the same timeline in Media 100 i (you can do that in HD and sw, btw.). So if you have projects that often need old material from earlier projects that would be the only reason for me not to use 720. But we decided to do all our projects in 702 and 48kHz some years ago, and this was a good decision since you can always use all media files in all projects.
If you want to export something from SW to Media 100 i 768 you should be able to do that using the Export->Other->QuickTime with Media 100 PAL setting. But quality will suffer doing that. -
