Yes, as I type this, I’m still debating whether I should hit the send button. It seems like quite a stupid question but it could save me money and time if I’m assuming incorrectly!

If I have a PAL tape, do I need a PAL deck/camcorder to capture to FCP5? Or can an NTSC deck be used to play the tape to capture as PAL?

After I capture to PAL, I would use something like the Natress software to convert it to NTSC. But I’m wondering if I can actually just capture PAL footage using an NTSC only deck. I’m assuming that I could buy a DSR-11 deck, set it to PAL and capture it using FCP.

    Thanks in advance.

To play a PAL tape, you need a PAL deck. PAL tapes will not play on NTSC decks. The DSR-11 is good as it is both an NTSC and PAL deck.

Yes…if you set the DSR-11 to PAL and have your sequence settings and capture settings as PAL, you can capture the PAL tape. If you then need this footage to be NTSC, you could use the Standards Converter from Nattress.com.

Thanks Shane. That’s what I thought. I guess I need to go buy a DSR-11!
