I’m trying to create an effect similar to the attached image as a ‘magic’ effect coming from the hands of an actor in some tracked footage. More ‘light’ or ‘energy’ based effects as we’re all used to seeing in films these days are simple enough but this has more of a ‘paint-like’ quality to it. I’m doing some experimentation to try and find the best solution to it. My main sticking point is that the fluid blending of colours that you see here is very difficult to replicate, and typical transfer modes that let colours blend tend to give a glowing or transparent look to the swirls as opposed to a more solid and vivid one.

At this moment I’ve created what I think is a half decent approximation using Trapcode Particular and blending in a variety of streak trails and some blurry/blobby filler elements, but it’s still imperfect and I’m wondering if anyone else has any other recommendations or thoughts on how they might achieve this, even in other software packages. I was toying with some fractal flame generators which look gorgeous, but aren’t as controllable in 3D space and thus are much harder to integrate into the motion of the footage.

if you take a paint stroke and add a mr mercury to it, you get some nice motion ..

I think I would approach this with Trapcode Tao, to make some path-based shapes and fractal distortions.
