Paint Issue
Hi to all,
I have problem with painting in AF. I’m using Macbook Pro M1 MAX, 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM, AF 25.2.2 and OS 14.7.1. Basically new instalation with one extra plug in QuickDraw. I’m using external 1TB SSD as Scratch Disc.
I’m using QuickDraw for hand drawing animations and after a few minutes the paint brush starts behaving strangelly. I draw a line, so I press the button, paint/move, release the button. In normal way this makes a painted line, but when the brush starts doing weird things it does like this. Click the button, moving cursor, brush follows the cursor even when it goes over the edge of the window. The AF freezes main menu. If I click again the paint stops following the cursor but when I want to click on menu it is still freezed but the brush is active again and paint itself everywhere I move my mouse or Wacom pen. After a minute or so, the menu become active and I can Undo all the mess. This does not go away until I quit the AF, then it works for short time fine but after few minutes its back. Purge AF did nothig.
I spent 3 hours with Adobe support but they have a Zero knowledge so it was just a waste of time. During this pointless time I re-installed AF to lowesst version(25.0.) possible, deleted Adobe folder in Documents and deleted all Adobe preferences in Library. Nothing made any difference. Did someone can help me, please? Thank you.

I’m not sure After Effects is the best solution for live recording your paint brush. You might be better using an app like Adobe Fresco. You can then export the recording and bring this into After Effects.

Sorry, who is talking about live recordings? I need to use basic paint tool, nothing else. The tool does not working properly. I troublesooted the issue for weeks and I can replicate it in a few seconds anytime I want, so I can say for sure, that the issue is not caused by any plugin or corupted file. The problem shows even on clean new instalation of AF without any pref. files, settings, on solid layer, which is the only thing in AF comp.

My mistake. I was trying to understand why you’d be using the Paint tool rather than an art program. If you add some paint to a layer, then leave the layer and take a look at the effects controls panel, you’ll see every brush stroke is adding as a separate effect. And each of these has a number of settings. My guess would be that you are using up all available processing power as you paint in much the same way as if you had dozens ror hundreds of Lens Flare effects on one layer.
I think other software might give you a better experience for painting and like I mentioned in my other reply, you can then export from these and bring the result into AE to finish.

Thank you Graham for thinking ahead but unfortunately it does not solve the problem I’m having. I’m working in AF for 25 years and the workflow was chosen for its specific benefits. I never had problems with this workflow before. AF must handle 20 layers without any problems. Some of my previous projects have hunderts of layers with multiple effects, masks etc. on them and AF could hanle all of that, so one solid with 20 short brush strokes can’t be any problem. My original post is maybe a bit confusing but I tought someone who experienced the same issue will recognise it and hopefuly write what is the problem, and how to solve it.

upgrading is not always worth it, can’t you just use AE 24 or 23 etc?
