I think (I almost sure) that both of these clips was recorded with a camera. The color Ink was simply colorized in AE with a layer and blending mode set to hue or color.

Both are pretty possible to do i think using a particle system, but if you consider time needed to set this up and render it, it’s probably better to just get a tank and some ink and just record it with a camera.

Yes, that kind of thing is nearly always shot in a tank.

If you want to attempt to do something realistic in CG, you need a fluid simulation app such as Realflow, but that takes a fair bit of of money (if I recall) and a lot of horsepower to get renders out at a non-glacial pace. Since it’s so powerful, it also takes a fair bit of tweaking to get what you want. But it’s very realistic. But … I don’t even know if it’ll mix two fluids. Mr. Useful, that’s me. 😉

The “billowing smoke” look might be possible. You might be able to get something by using a regular 3D app using some kind of particle/hypervoxel simulation, or maybe with particle Illusion or Particular in AE.

Blender has a half decent fluid simulator. And its free.
You just have to learn it.

Artbeats has some great stuff. What you pay is what you get!

sorry this is a little late, but Andrew Kramer has some pre matted ‘ink flows’/’paint drops’ in his Riot Gear dvd on videocopilot.net I have used these effects from time to time. they come in quite handy.

Yes, I know Riot Gear. I actually do use it, but I just though about the way it could be made, ’cause there are only a few of them on the Riot Gear DVD and not much on the web.
