    Hi

hey, its great to see three of the fcp “dairymen” over here at the p2 forum!

My producer is about to emabark on a three week shoot all over europe, like 5 or 6 cities, and would love to use a 500.

However, he has concerns over the whole tapeless thing, namely he is worried about handling and shipping hard drives.

I am thinking he brings either a powerbook OR a laptop with a big hard drive, and a second protable hard drive as well. everynight he copies over the P2’s to the hard drive on the laptop, then copies off the laptop to the external. OR he uses genie to copy to bothe simoultaneously.

once he fills up the external, or when the shoot wraps, he fedexs the external drive back here, and carries the laptop on the plane.

the only other way i cna think of is to lug along an LTO drive, and copy off p2’s to the laptop THEN copy from the laptop to the LTO.

he wants to travel as light as possible, enabling him easy access in and out of the locations, so he does not want to lug a bunch of gear I guess he could set up the laptop etc at his hotel, and do all the copyin at night

how does all this sound to anyone? how would you do it? how do you pack and ship hard drives so as not to get damaged?

I know this is alot of asking on my part, but i am sure these are questions that everyone is asking.

    thanx

    bee eph

    hello again

it used to be when i answered my own posts people thought i was talking to myself and should seek medical attention! 🙂

My producer is something of an old school guy, and does not want to be responsible for having to do all the p2 file copying etc, so, in his world, he would have to bring along a tech of some kind. he sees this as an added expense, and does not wan tto incur this.

therefore, my question has been answered.

    thanx anyway

    Hi,

anyway, I work for three years on P2 now. It is a perfect system. You need a laptop, and two HD with a FW 400 or FW 800 connection.
Always double back-up. There are FW 400’s whose powersupply comes through the computer (very handy).
On one HD you save the contents folder. On the other I import the P2 files in FCP.

    regards

Sorry Bob…I missed this post….your initial one. I did see your followup.

I would have him use the P2 Genie to copy the footage to two drives…neither one the internal. Two daisy chained drives would be fine. Then he keeps one and fed exes one back.

I too am getting very wary of hard drives. I lost two data drives in the past 5 months and really want something else. I really am interested in BluRay burners for backup now.
