P2 Volume missing data in “icon” and “clip” folders…
I recently shot a project on the HVX 200 and used the Panasonic P2 Store (AJ-PCS060G) to dump the cards as we shot. I then transferred all the volumes onto an external drive. I imported all of the cards into Final Cut using the Log and Transfer window. All of the cards seemed to import just fine, until I looked more closely and realized some footage was missing. When I went through to double check, I realized one of my Volumes was not mounting in Log and Transfer. When attempting to open through the Log and Transfer window, simply nothing happens. No error message, nothing.
I looked into the folders in the p2 volume and there appears to be about 5gb worth of data in there. There are also a bunch of files (the normal amount) in the Audio and Video folders. But there is only 1 file in the Clip folder and there are no files in the Icon folder.
I saw someone on the Apple Support forum talking about P2 Log Pro so I downloaded the demo but that doesn’t seem to be working. It either gives me one of two error messages: a combo of “The selected P2 volume contains no valid clips.” followed by “Importing the P2 clips failed” or “The document path cannot be used” depending on if I attempt to open the “card_03” folder or the “CONTENTS” folder.
I am assuming that somehow the data on the card/volume was corrupted. I’m hoping that since there still appears to be Audio and Video data in the volume that it will be possible to recover the footage. Anyone else had this happen? Any ideas as far as other p2 import/repair software that I could try? Any advice at all? Thanks in advance.

Well, the card might have gotten corrupt in the camera, or it might have happened during the transfer to the drive. If it was in the camera, there are tools in the camera to fix the P2 clips. The issue might have been in the copying process from card to drive…files might have been skipped. This is why I use SHOTPUT P2 to offload, it does a file verification from source to new files. And if you don’t copy protect the cards before you offload, the MacOS writes invisible files to the card that can cause issues. And the issue is that you cannot use FCP to import the footage without all the files fully intact.
But now that the footage is no longer on the card, your choices are:
Get HDLOG and use the REPAIR P2 option in there. It might fix it, it might not. Depends if the issue was caused by the camera, or in the copying process. If the copying process, then it won’t work.
Get third party MXF decoders like Calibrated or MXF4Mac or Raylight. They allow FCP to work with the MXF files directly, no log and transfer needed. Demos of all are available.

Thanks Shane, I downloaded the demo of Calibrated last night and it seems like it will do what I’m looking for. I will try out HDLOG when I get into the office later today. I have a feeling HDLOG won’t work since I suspect the issue was caused by the copying process rather than the camera itself, but we’ll see. Thanks again.
