Hi, For shooting Hi DEF Is there a chart on the web that can tell me times and sizes.
I’m just trying to get my head around P2 cards versus the Panasonic HDX900 camera using Tape.

How many minutes on a 16 gig P2 card?
How many minutes on on a HD tape?
    For Editing
How long does it take to transfer a P2 16 gig card to a hard drive to a Mac book pro or a G5?
What is the megabyte size per minute for DVCPRO HD and Pro Rez 422?
Just trying to decide if Tape is a better way to go than P2 cards.

Also what should I be delivering the media on for various clients?
What formats/codecs are being used on network TV?
How long does it take to burn 23 mins ( I think that’s maximum right now) to a blue ray disc?

    Hi,

The size of full frame rate DVCPRO HD is about 1 GB per minute. Therefore the 16GB card is 16 minutes. If however you are shooting in 24P, You can work in native modes on the P2 camera and get 2 1/2 minutes per GB. This is true of the HPX500 and the HVX200, the 2000 will be able to do this in August. In reality the 2000 will not be compatible with the 16GB cards until August, so the timeing is equal on that feature set.

As far as P2 vs Tape, well I can say that Data Storage is much cheaper than DVCPRO HD tape. You can store on a DLT like the Quantum 600DTLA for about $100, 30 minutes of tape is about $30, so I am sure you can see that 300 minutes for $100 is a real deal.

What a lot of guys are doing is handing off a HDD with the footage on it. In general you will spend about the same amount for the 1394 or USB Drive that you would for Tape, and you charge the client for that anyhow. The cool part is that they can reuse the drive the next time they work with you.

    Hope that helps,

    Jan
