  • P2 Transfer Times?

Posted by Michael Colin on June 11, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Greetings. I’ve tested P2 card transfer times from the HVX200 and the P2 Store to my MacBook Pro (Intel). Both sloooow.

My question is: how much faster will the transfer be when I get the Duel PCMCIA to Express adaptor and ingest directly from the card? It looks like we’ll be shooting with just two cards, one 16MB and one 32MB card, and I’m worried about the transfer dance with different sized cards.

    Thanks!

    Hi Michael,
I have a SPX800, it transfers into my Early 2008 Macpro at about 4 times realtime using camera’s USB slot, usually to a raided pair of 750 gig HDD, via Log and transfer in FCP 6.0.3.
I don’t transfer the P2 files very often, so can’t advise of that.
    Cheers

Yep they are sloowwwww. One faster way to go is get an old Powerbook and transfer direct to the PCMCIA slot. Or get a PCD20 P2 drive which enables Firewire 800 transfer. One workflow is simply get sufficient 16GB or 32GB cards and avoid field transfer completely. Bring them home at the end of the day and transfer all with the PCD20 so you don’t wait for loads out in the field.

    Hi,

The P2 Store is a USB2 device and I know that in some cases the MAC sets it up as a USB1 and in that case it would be very slow. For the full P2 Store I would expect it to take about an hour and 15 for transfer. For the HVX transfer over firewire, my experience is about 1 GB per minute. The Duel-Adapter is about 2 GBs per minute.

    Hope this helps,

    Jan
