P2 Transfer Seems Slower
Posted by Jason Jenkins on October 19, 2010 at 11:24 pmI recently upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard –love the new OS! However, P2 transfer from my HVX via firewire seems slower than before. I’m clocking in at about 4.75 minutes per Gigabyte, not including verification. I’m using P2CMS for copying the card to eSATA drive on my Mac Pro. Any ideas? Thanks!

October 20, 2010 at 6:21 pmI just ingested a full 16GB P2 card –it took over an hour. That is pretty sad considering it was 42 minutes worth of footage. It would have been faster to capture a tape!

October 21, 2010 at 1:50 amYes, I was using firewire. Maybe I should try USB for kicks…?

October 21, 2010 at 3:10 amOk. Rereading your post correctly this time:
This is a new computer?
Did you install the proper p2 drivers for snow leopard?
What esata card do you have?

This is a Mac Pro 1,1 that I’ve been using for four years, but I recently upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. According to Panasonic, no P2 drivers are required when using the HVX200. I’ll be happy if that is wrong and all I need to do is install some drivers! It is a Firmtek eSATA card with the latest drivers –no problem with the speed there.

October 21, 2010 at 5:44 pmDid you do a fresh install of snow?
Are you sure your Sara card is Snow compatible?
You shoul most definitely install the snow leopard p2 drivers.

Yes, a fresh install on a brand new Solid State Drive. eSATA card is working perfectly –105 MB/s write & 112 MB/s read from a single drive.
Should I install the P2 drivers meant for Panasonic’s pricey P2 card readers?

October 21, 2010 at 10:21 pmI installed the P2 drivers for Snow Leopard and the new version of P2CMS and now I’m getting transfer at about 2.6 minutes per GB –which is closer to what I was getting on Tiger. However, it is still only slightly faster than a real-time tape transfer.

October 21, 2010 at 10:27 pmSo go shoot tape?
We get a little under a gig a minute but we don’t use the camera.
I’d suggest looking into a p2 card reader.
