Ok, so I have my first shoot with the HVX-200a this weekend. I got Shot Put Pro to transfer the footage into a Powerbook G4 laptop. I didn’t realize though that I have no way of actually viewing the footage on the computer once it is transferred. I have FCP, but this is not my laptop that I’m using to transfer it, so I didn’t want to have to install it unless necessary. Is there any other way for me to view the files and just see that they work once they are transferred over, other than a FCP install? It’s a live concert, so there isn’t going to be a chance to do anything over if it doesn’t work. If I had one section of the show go bad, I do have two other cameras, or it might be possible to get the band to play the song again at the end of the show. However, I’m afraid of leaving the show, getting back to my FCP rig, and finding out then that it doesn’t load in properly. Any help is appreciated if I can find a P2 viewer that works on a PowerPC laptop. Thanks guys.

P2CMS…this will allow you to view the MXF files…and it is free.

I had looked into that, but according to their website, it’s for Intel Macs only. I’m planning on getting a MacBook Pro in the very near future, but am borrowing someone’s Powerbook G4 in the meantime. Unfortunately, no P2CMS support. I thought since Shot Put Pro did so much, that I would be able to view the files after I transferred them, but I thought wrong apparently. You know what they say about assumptions…

I’m probably going to suck it up and install FCP only on this computer and see if I can just check the files in the Log and Transfer window to make sure they are video. Thanks for the reply though, that’s why I love this place.

    Hi Steven,
Why can’t you get enough P2 cards to shoot your gig ?, easy solution.
you don’t need self created stress when shooting.

Oh let me count the ways.

First off, we are a two man company just getting into our 2nd year of business. We just bought the camera, 2 P2 cards and a Firestore drive. It’s a 3 camera shoot of a Jazz concert that SAYS it’s going to be 2 hours. Not sure how many of you are Jazz fans, but there is no way it’s going to stay at it’s alloted time. They want it in HD, so I’m cutting it at 720P/24PN to save as much space as possible. We had to rent the other 2 cameras, and one of them didn’t have any P2 cards, so our 2 are going in his camera. The “negotiated” payment for the gig is $1,000 less than we were hoping for (no, not thrilled, but we are really wanting some cool gigs to show off what we can do right now), and rentals already turned out to be more than we anticipated. After spending a few thousand on the camera and cards already, it just isn’t feasible for us to go spend a few more thousand on enough cards for 3 cameras to shoot for potentially 3 hours. Trust me, we have a plan that gets us 3 of our own cameras and a boatload of P2 cards, it’s just going to take us some time. If two of the cameras weren’t going to be handheld, I’d look more seriously at more Firestore drives, but I’m just not comfortable with that.

So, if anyone wants to donate some P2 cards to the cause, I’m in Nashville, TN. 🙂 Otherwise, I’ll just post it on YouTube and get you guys some links after the fact, cause I think it’s gonna be an amazing show. Hopefully I can do it justice. Thanks guys.

Actually Tom, I have been keeping an eye on your site, and am very interested in your P2 reader that you are working on. I also am trying to find someone who sells those FujiFilm P2 cards. I’ll keep an eye open for ya, and probably get a box from you when it’s available. Keep us posted.

Well, then you might need to spend some money. https://www.imagineproducts.com has P2 LOG…that allows you to view the footage. Or installing RAYLIGHT might help. I know installing MXF4QT puts a codec on there that allows you to open the MXF files in QT.

    Hi Steven,

Yes, you have a big task ahead, now you have given details, Maybe if you want to use this gig to launch yourselves then cutting a loss on it is no big deal. good luck with it.
Shane’s advice is way to go for you.
Yes my Card reader tests are good so far on the Intel Macpro, I’m also testing kexts on a USB2 to P2 card reader, it will be slow but universal and cheap, that’s what the low end of the market wants, the top end get the Pana solutions.
Fuji cards are available here in oz,But I’ve heard a dealer bought the complete stock and will sell at the newer prices.

    Cheers
