I had a challenging situation that has worked out well and wanted to share it.

My editor is working on a rented MAC Nitris DX at 1080i 59.94. We’re using footage from HD Cam, Digibeta, DVDs, and graphic files.

The client presented us with P2 footage 720p 59.94. It would not import into the project because the Avid tells us the frame rate is wrong. Huge problem because I have 4 hours worth of HD footage I can’t use.

I experimented with Raylight MXFX but there is no option for changing from p to I which is what I thought the problem was. I found that by converting the frame rate to 29.97 and removing pulldown, the footage is quickly transcoded to (30fps)29.97 and it imports easily and quickly. No P versus i issues. Man, it is seamless.

Thought I’d share a success story instead of a problem and hopefully this will help someone in the future when faced with the same issue.

    Interesting.

We usually solve this by importing into a 720P project, stringing out a timeline, then outputting to DVCPROHD. That tape can them be captured by using the 1400 deck’s conversion to 1080i out. It’s fine when there isn’t a lot of footage, but your idea is worth a gander.
