I was wondering if there was any other way, other than using FCP, to convert all the P2’s mxf files to Quicktime movies?

Is there just a simple standalone application? Is there anyone smart enough out there that can write such an application and would license and sell it?

In a Post-production facility that doesn’t heavily rely on Final Cut, P2 is a little bit of a pain in the Ass.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

    P2 Log by imagineproducts.com.

But that converts it into a DVCPRO HD Quicktime. You need to have the DVCPRO HD codec installed on your system, and that comes with Final Cut Pro.

What edit system are you using? There are versions of Avid that work with MXF files natively, and there are converters for Vegas and Premeire (I think) called Raylight. Edius edits the MXF files natively.

    What do you rely on?

    Thanks Shane,

I’ll check out both of those applications. Are you familiar with either of them? If so do you have any tips when using them?

    Thanks again,

    Shane

Either of them? I listed one…P2 Log.

No, I haven’t used it. I tested HD Log, the more expensive version and found it very handy.

But again, you haven’t told us what edit system you are intending this for. That is a big determining factor.

[Shane Dillon] “In a Post-production facility that doesn’t heavily rely on Final Cut,”

What do they rely on? If they’re on the PC you can use either http://www.dvfilm.com Raylight to export an .AVI, or you can use Serious Magic’s DVCPRO-HD decoder to export MXF files into AVI files. I think P2 Log is about the only standalone application on the Mac and it converts to .MOV files.

Many high-end posts houses that were AVID only are setting up FCP bays….
They are discovering that many producers are off-lining with FCP
and many projects are being shot with P2 and they find the P2
integration is much tighter with FCP. They may go back to the AVID
for final CC and print to tape.
