  • P2 Rebate… how long?

Posted by Benjamin Tubb on February 24, 2007 at 6:43 pm

I priority mailed the rebate forms and stuff into Panasonic on January 29th. About how much longer until I receive my P2 card?

Everyone I ask says something different… the dealer at VTP where I purchased the camera told me it’d be 6-8 weeks, a Panasonic employee told me 2-3 weeks, and the website told me 3-5. What the heck am I supposed to believe?

What bugs me the most, is that I’ve received no confirmation as to whether or not my stuff even went through properly. I have about 3 projects waiting on this card (I flat out CANNOT afford to buy one, I’m still $500 in debt from the camera), and it would suck really bad if I wasted a month waiting for this thing when It’s not even coming.

I understand that I have no right to complain, as Panasonic is giving me this thing for free, but still. I at least want a straight answer as to when.

About how long did usually take for anyone else to receive their’s?

the panasonic site has a place on the rebate info page that links to a page that you can see the status of our rebate, not an exact progress but it will at least let you know that are processing it. There is also a helpdesk number you can call.

I can relate to your fustration, but I wouldn’t hold off on any projects waiting on it. I mailed in my Rebate form on December 26th, Panasonic received it on the December 29th and I got my P2 Card and HVX Book last week (Feb. 16th). It is a lengthy process and will require some patience.

If it helps, you can go to this url to check the status:

    https://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SpecialOffersForModel?storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=93120&surfModel=AG-HVX200

Click on the appropriate link and enter in your relevant info. It should at least show you a status. But, to be honest with you, I just received mine last week and the status still shows “Fulfillment In Process”.

Again, if you are waiting on this card to do work and you can’t afford to buy another, then rent one. Either that or a Firestore. But just like with most rebates, this is going to happen quickly.

Yes sir, 6 to 8 weeks. I applied for mine last week in December and got it only last week, and no notification of any kind here either.

However the HVX handbook is worth the wait.

If you filed online, did you also mail in a copy of your proof-of-purchase receipt? This is a separate requirement.

Thanks for all your answers… I followed the link, and it looks like it’s in progress. I can rest in peace now.

I wish I could rent one, but I’m OUT OF MONEY. My current balance is NEGATIVE 500 dollars. I’m working 7 bucks an hour to pay that back… Until, of course, I get the P2 card, then I’ll be doing video productions to make the cash. But ’til then, everything I want to do needs that card, so I’m just kinda on hold.

    Thanks though.

    Hi Ben,

Any potential for streaming to your laptop to record HD. And of course at least half of the folks that have this camera use it in DV mode to pay for itself. That is the beauty of this camera.

Well, as for the recording to laptop thing:

I use Premiere Pro 2.0, so I can’t record HD through firewire… I know PP2 can capture HDV through firewire, and HD through HD-SDI, but I dont’ have the latter, and I’m not shooting HDV. So that doesn’t help me.
However, in the next week I should be receiving a free copy of DV Rack HD 2 (My teacher is an Adobe Master Teacher), and I’ll be doing that… but I’m still kind of sketchy on that. I’m going to be shooting a feature film in 720p24pN, and you can’t do native 24p through firewire realtime, can you? If not, then if I mix standard 24p footage with 24pN footage in a timeline, will that mess anything up?

As for the DV thing, I’m just starting out in this business, and since I don’t have much to show, the only hook I have to offer clients right now is “Hey! I can do HD!” So naturally, that’s what they all want. On top of that, it just so happens that all of the things I’m working on pretty much NEED HD. The feature film, for example. I don’t want to shoot MiniDV and blow it up to a theater screen. Then I have another project that relies almost entirely on keying, and key miniDV footy? Been there, TRIED that.

[Benjamin18] “I’m going to be shooting a feature film in 720p24pN, and you can’t do native 24p through firewire realtime, can you?”

No, and yes. No, you can’t, because the HVX doesn’t output video data when in 24pN mode. But yes, in that you could put it in regular 720p/24p mode (not “N”) and DV Rack 2.0 HD is smart enough to strip out the extra frames and record it in the same mode as 24pN mode. So you get the same benefit, just in a different way.
