P2 Portable AG-HPG20 – No flagged frames support
Posted by Tim Maloney on February 24, 2009 at 4:39 amHello all,
Followed a thread below where people were trying to record 10 bit out of the HDSDI spigot from the Varicam.
Of course ( at least our early model ) does out put 10Bit – with the flagged frames BUT only when not recording on a tape.
When the tape is running the output of the HDSDI spigot reverts to 8BIT.
I see discussion also about the P2 Portable AG-HPG20. Nice idea but the deal breaker for me is that apparently – according to our Panasonic Reps in Australia, that unit DOES NOT see the flagged frames from the Varicam.
Any further knowledge about this potentially great device?????
JAN?????

This is because it has gone through the compression and DVCPRO HD is 8 bit.

They really should do their homework down there and try it. It does do flagged frames on its recording and I have removed them from DVCPRO HD. I have even pulled out a ramped piece in FCP that I recorded from a Varicam on the P2 Portable. There is a piece of software being developed by DVFilm that will remove the flagged frames from the AVC-Intra. That plug-in will be available about the same time as the P2 Portable.

We have the brochure and operations manual up on our website. http://www.panasonic.com/Broadcast And yes, it is a great little device. A HDD5 machine I can carry in my briefcase. 😉

February 24, 2009 at 7:19 pmone more question. Will the AG-HPG20 also remove the not tagged frames from 720/25p over 60p? If it removes the not tagged frames what will be stored? 720/25p?
Thanks

February 27, 2009 at 10:46 pmThis unit will only record 50I 1080/ 50P 720, 60i 1080/ 60P 720. It does not do any removal ar all. It takes in the flags, records them and the Frame Rate Converter remove the extra frames.
If you want something that does this in record, please take a look at our P2 Mobile, AJ-HPM110.

DVFilm’s Raylight MXFX 2.0 will have the capability to remove the flagged frames. MXFX 2.0 will be for sale in late April 2009. Here is a short video explaining how it works with the HPG-20:

The HPG20 records 720/60P with tagged frames in that case and then Raylight MXFX 2.0 is used to remove them. It’s a pretty quick process and all the metadata is preserved in the final result. The final result is a new (and smaller!) P2 folder with MXF files in 720/25P format.
It will also work with VFR mode and other pulldown modes, and other cameras. One potential use for example is shoot 48 frames per second for slow motion. MXFX in that case can remove the flagged frames and slow it down to 24P for editing.
