Didn’t find this in any other posts.

P2 card log and transfer through FCP6, to external hard drive is crashing my macbook pro. All footage shows up and playback is perfect. But while screening clips in the L&T window, the computer crashes. Twice tonight a gray shade descended on my screen telling me to hold down the power button for 4 seconds to shut down. Restart message was, Mac OS X quit unexpectedly.

MacBook Pro, P2 card plugged in with duel adaptor, 1TB G-drive on 400 fire wire, FCP6. (Footage shot on HVX200). I am new to entire system. Any direction would be appreciated.

PS My background is 25 years as prod/director. First year at shooting/editing/and Mac. Simplicity would be a godsend. Thanks.

    Hi Connie,

My guess would be something is wrong with the externals- either the hard drive or the adapter. How much space is on the external hard drive? And how much space is on your internal hard drive for that matter?

I would try this and see how it works- make a folder on your G-Raid and call it P2card01. Copy all the contents of the P2 card (the Contents folder and the .txt file on the card) to said folder. Eject the P2 card. Open FCP and ingest from the hard drive. When in Log and Transfer mode, you can click “Add Custom Path” and just navigate your way to the P2Card01 folder you made. Your clips should show up and you can ingest away.

Shane Ross has a P2 import page here on the Cow- https://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2fcp6.php
Check out the video and the conversation that follows, it may be helpful 🙂

[connie Bottinelli] “Twice tonight a gray shade descended on my screen telling me to hold down the power button for 4 seconds to shut down. Restart message was, Mac OS X quit unexpectedly. “

That is a MAJOR issue. That is called a KERNAL PANIC and can relate to either a serious hardware issue or major OS issue if this happens regularly. Occasionally this might happen, but if it is consistent, then that points to a larger problem.

Run Disk First aid on your system drive. Both REPAIR PERMISSIONS and Verify/Repair disk. If these don’t find something and fix it and you still have issues, you might need to remove and reinstall FCStudio. https://www.digitalrebellion.com and get the FCS Remover, run it, then reinstall FCP and update it. If THAT doesn’t fix it, then you need to do a full OS reinstall. Talking backing up your files, erasing the drive, and reinstalling. If that doesn’t fix it…then it is a hardware issue: RAM, Logicboard, something. In that case you need to take it in for service.

But one step at a time. Disk Utility first.

    Thank you Shane and Nicole,
Great to have people out there, I’ll tell you.
    Shane:
I did notice “kernal panic” in the crash report. And it looked WAY serious when that shade came down. I did the verify and repair permissions. I was able to log and transfer a different P2 card with no problem. A call in to Apple support said a whole batch of faulty video cards were installed in my model of MacBook Pro. Nice. He said it would be a logic board issue if it happens again, verifying your diagnosis. Yikes.
    Nicole:
Thanks for the plan B. I was instinctively headed there if I couldn’t figure out anything else. Glad to know it was a viable alternative.

Thank you both for the suggestions and the FCP 101 language. Here’s hoping I don’t ever have to post about this again!
