P2 Log and Transfer issues…”incomplete files”

Make sure that you load ALL the p2 card dumps into the log and transfer window…then it can stitch together the spanned footage.

And the following:

Shane’s Stock Answer #36 – “One or more clips failed to import…”

Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don’t like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)…the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window…is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.

What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.

ALSO…in the P2 Import window…in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

ALSO…make sure your file names aren’t too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.

I always appreciate your tips and help. I reviewed your demo on working with P2 cards before we wnet to the shoot and that has really helped the workflow. I’ll have to check with the DP about dumping bad takes. That would certainly explain the extra clip names. I was wondering if a program like Raylight does a better job of converting the files for FCP or if FCP works then that’s the best way to go. Just wanting to get a handle on mastering the P2 workflow as it has become more and more dominant in my world as an Indie and Doco editor.

WIth FCP, the log and transfer process joins spanned clips and puts them in to one QT file. So, even though you might have 9 clips in your VIDEO folder, FCP might join a few of those spanned clip into one QT file leaving you with less QT movies than there are clips. Hope that makes sense.

FOr the ‘incomplete’ clips, if you load all of the cards from the shoot into the log and transfer window at the same time, FCP will automatically join the incomplete clip with it’s other incomplete half and make a complete clip. Hope that makes sense as well.

While the log and transfer window in FCP makes some things easy, it definitely does not harness the power of P2 and it also creates a lot of unnecessary work and duplicated media. I have a tutorial about a native MXF workflow that involves the use and transfer of searchable metadata to FCP. If you don’t know about metadata, this should get you thinking about it.
