For years, I’ve been able to import P2 directly from my HVX200 into FCP via Firewire. PP doesn’t seem to able to do this. When I double-click the disk image in the media browser, I see the thumbnails, but when I select IMPORT on the drop-down, the app becomes unresponsive and I have to force-quit PP. The specs are:

PP 5.5 running on MacPro 8-core under OSX.7, HVX running latest Panasonic firmware (4.10). The PP help page doesn’t actually include the procedure, but just vaguely warns that you may need to update unspecified drivers. I can import the QTs generated by FCP, but why can’t I do a straight log-and-transfer in CS5?

    Hi Michael,

You should able to choose import, navigate to the video folder inside the content folder and hit import.

The import should only take a few seconds.

Thanks, Vince; but that doesn’t work, since the MXF files need conversion to compatible media. It looks like this has to happen as a P2 import through the media browser. It freezes as soon as I try to import through there.

    Hi Michael,

What version of Premiere are you using?

The compatible media error will come up if you try to import the entire content folder. You should navigate to the “Video” folder inside the content folder, and only import these files.

Also, are these the original folders from the card?

You need to move the files off the p2 card first. That way, you’ll have access to the files when you’re camera isn’t connected.

Unlike fcp, PPro uses the native files, not a rewrapped copy.

Version 5.5.2. No error shows, just the spinning beach ball, then the freezeup. Using media browser, when I double-click the P2 disk image, the individual clips show up as thumbnails, so it’s already navigated there, but it locks up as soon as I try to select and import one.

    Michael-

Are you trying to edit from the card itself? If not, that’s what you’re doing.

I would suggest you use a program like ShotPut Pro to move the data off if the p2 card and on to a hard drive. Then, import the media to PPro from that hard drive.

Thanks Jeremy and Vince. I got spoiled by the legendary Apple/FCP “one click and done” interface. PP is a bit more FORMAL. What seems to work is to move the card’s files onto the media drive as you’ve suggested. I do this at finder level. Both the CONTENTS folder and the .txt need to be there for it to be recognized as P2. Now PP sees it as a legitimate MXF and you can drag right out of the media browser straight into the project! Done. Thanks again, mates.
