So I noticed after bringing in all my P2 footage for a project, that there were some files in the video folder (in the contents folder) that weren’t in my bins. I remounted those folders in the log and transfer window, and there were a couple of files that didn’t show up there. One of the MXF files is almost 4 gigs, so it seems like there could be a good amount of video that I am missing. I just can’t get it to show up in the log and transfer window.

I also noticed that I had a clip in my bin that I couldn’t find the matching file the P2 folders. There was a QT file that was created, but no MFX file. I didn’t change the clip names in the logging part of the log and transfer window … just brought everything in as is. Does Final Cut change names of some files or is this a corrupt file issue?

When I play the clips that do come in, I can see interlace lines on my external NTSC monitor. It almost looks like video that is only playing back one set of fields. I had my timeline settings match the P2 clips, and I am monitoring through a Decklink HD Extreme card doing the downconversion with video playback set to Blackmagic NTSC/23.98P – 8 bit (720×486). Are there monitor settings that would make this video look better on an external NTSC monitor or is this the nature of monitoring downconverted P2 footage on an NTSC monitor?

    I’m using Final Cut 7.

Thanks in advance for you help,
    Keith

The Log and Transfer window will combine files that comprise the parts of a clip that requires more than 4GB of space on the cards. In other words, these long clips are made up of multiple MXF files which are combined into a single clip in the L&T window. Thus, it looks as if there are fewer clips ingested than are on the cards.

You don’t say what your record format is. That would impact the answer to the latter part of your post.

    Final Cut Pro 6.0.5, Mac OS-X 10.5.6, Quicktime 7.6, Adobe Prod Prem CS4, G5 Quad 2.5, Kona-LHe V6, 8.5GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7800-GT 256MB, G-RAID 2x1TB FW800, 6TB RAID-5 (Enhance E8-ML, Highpoint 2322), Panasonic HVX-200P P2. Also MBP 17″ Core 2 Duo 2.5, 4GB, GeForce 8600M GT 512MB.

Thanks for the info, Tom. The format of the QT’s made by Final Cut are DVCPro HD720p60 @ 23.98fps. I didn’t change anything in the log and transfer window’s preferences, so I’m assuming this was the record format.

I also have some footage that was shot on the Canon 5D, that I converted in compressor to DVCPro HD 720 @23.98fps, and I’m seeing the interlace look on the external monitor with that footage as well.

No, that doesn’t sound right on the playback. I have a Kona LHe and I usually view my HD footage on a Panasonic pro plasma, but the Kona will downconvert with the proper pulldown added and it should look good on an NTSC monitor as well.

Yeah, I didn’t think it was right. It doesn’t seem to be a pulldown issue. Everything plays back smoothly, it just looks like I’m only seeing one set of fields. Almost like there is a half res box checked somewhere. If there is a diagonal line somewhere in the frame, it’s a bit stair-steppy.

I won’t be outputting this project from this box, so I guess I’ll be fine for now, but it would be nice to figure this out for the future.
