P2 Import ‘Error unknown’
Posted by Matthias Ort on September 28, 2008 at 11:09 amHello my name is Matthias,
we just updated our Final Cut Pro 5 to Final Cut Studio 2.
It is running on a PowerMac G5 Dual 1,8 GHz with Mac OS X 10.4.11
When I choose ‘Logging and Transfer” I am able to open the P2 Cards and view all the clips.
I am also able to give them names etc.
When I Try to import everything ist allright, but in the end I have no clip imported and Final Cut shows me an ‘Error: unknown’
How can I fix this problem?
Oh I uninstalled the ‘Perian’, but it had no effect…Best Wishes

#36 – One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane’s Stock Answer #36 – “One or more clips failed to import…”
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don’t like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)…the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window…is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO…in the P2 Import window…in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO…make sure your file names aren’t too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.

September 29, 2008 at 8:49 amThank you Shane,
but I tried this before I posted my question.
There are no deleted clips on the card and the import is working nearly to the end, but instead of disappearing the clip stays in the window and shows ‘error unknown’.
I don’t think this is a codec problem, because I am able to watch the clips from the card (or HDD)
So maybe you’ve got another hint?Greetings,

March 22, 2010 at 4:27 amHI!
I am having the exact same problem. I also tried the stock #36 answer to no effect. Has any progress been made on this I could really use some help – its slowing me down on an important project.
I would love some additional input. How did you finally resolve the problem?
I am running a G4, FCP 6.0.6, mac os 10.4.11, QT 7.6.4
Thank you for any help you can offer – this is very frustrating.
Best Regards,
John

March 22, 2010 at 3:14 pmThe external HD that has the P2 footage is formatted for FAT 32 and I’m using mac will that have an effect?

March 22, 2010 at 4:21 pmMacs can read Fat32 drives fine. It is always advisable to have your P2 backup on Fat32 drives anyway, so that they can be accessable by any machine. Since P2 cards are Fat32 formatted, it should be fine.
It is the Media Drive format this is pretty important that it be MacOS Extended.
