  • P2 & HD tape size, transfer time?

Posted by Pete Sake on June 11, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Hi, For shooting Hi DEF Is there a chart on the web that can tell me times and sizes.
I’m just trying to get my head around P2 cards versus the Panasonic HDX900 camera using Tape.

How many minutes on a 16 gig P2 card?
How many minutes on on a HD tape?
    For Editing
How long does it take to transfer a P2 16 gig card to a hard drive to a Mac book pro or a G5?
What is the megabyte size per minute for DVCPRO HD and Pro Rez 422?
Just trying to decide if Tape is a better way to go than P2 cards.

Also what should I be delivering the media on for various clients?
What formats/codecs are being used on network TV?
How long does it take to burn 23 mins? ( I think that’s maximum right now) to a blue ray disc?
    Thanks
    Peter

[peter hitchcock] “How many minutes on a 16 gig P2 card?”

    What format? 1080? 720? 24pn? A lot of factors to consider…

[peter hitchcock] “How many minutes on on a HD tape?”

40 min. It shoots 720p at 59.94, but it you choose the 24p setting, FCP will remove the pulldown when it captures.

[peter hitchcock] “How long does it take to transfer a P2 16 gig card to a hard drive to a Mac book pro or a G5?”

    In my experience…a gig a minute. 16GB would then take 16 min…maybe a min or two more…

[peter hitchcock] “What is the megabyte size per minute for DVCPRO HD and Pro Rez 422?”

AGAIN…what format are we talking about here? 720P? 1080p? DVCPRO HD 720p60 is 12MB/s….ProRes 422 is 28MB/s, a little over double the space. But if you shoot 720p24…then you are at 6MB/s…4.5 times less data rate.

[peter hitchcock] “Also what should I be delivering the media on for various clients?”

What do they want? That is up to them.

[peter hitchcock] “What formats/codecs are being used on network TV?”

HDCAM….D5…HDCAM SR. 720p59.94 for some, 1080p 23.98 for others. Depends on the network.

[peter hitchcock] “How long does it take to burn 23 mins? ( I think that’s maximum right now) to a blue ray disc?”

    NO clue…haven’t done it.

Thanks Shane, yes your right there is lots of factors. I would be shooting at 720p 29.97 frames though I might shoot at 24 f. Not sure about shooting less @ 24 frames I’m not sure if I like the look.

Tne Panasonic cameras dont do 1080p So I think I have to go 720p with Panasonic. Unless you know of a solution for up rezing.

What media are Broadcasters excepting HD?

Just read on a site using Toast 8 Blue Ray 45 gig takes 90 mins to burn but they didnt say what CP
I’m on a Betacam system right now so Im trying to figure out whats best for the next 10 years.

[Peter hitchcock] “Tne Panasonic cameras dont do 1080p So I think I have to go 720p with Panasonic.”

Not true. The HVX-200 shoots 1080p. All the Panasonic P2 cameras shoot 1080p. I suspect that even the tape based ones MIGHT (might…I am not a camera operator) as the DVCPRO HD decks have a 1080p option…suggesting that format is available on tape.

[Peter hitchcock] “Unless you know of a solution for up rezing.”

KONA 3. I cross convert my 720p to 1080p all the time with the Kona 3.

[Peter hitchcock] “What media are Broadcasters excepting HD?”

HDCAM, D5, HDCAM SR…and to a MUCH LESSER extent…DVCPRO HD..Depends on the broadcaster.

Shane, are you sure about shooting 1080p. I have read the brochures on the 500 and 900 and they say 1080i I know the HVX200 only shoots 1080i.
I would love to get a camera that shoots 1080p

I swear the HVX-200 (I don’t have the camera on me, and I have little shooting experience with it) has a 1080 24PA setting.

Hope someone with the camera chimes in.

The HVX-200 can shoot 1080/24p (traditional 3:2 pull-down inserted), 1080/24pa (advanced pull-down inserted) or 1080/30p. Unfortunately, there is no 1080/24pn mode to save room on the cards. 🙂
