It’s my understanding that the P2 cameras shoot DVCPROHD but not full resolution. so 1080HD is 1260×1080 instead of 1920×1080 and 720HD is 960×720 instead of 1260×720.

Is this animorphic style HD it’s shooting? What are the pixel aspects. Or can someone clue me in on this?

I assume its so they can shoot HD but still keep the file size down.

It is really more a function of the DVCProHD codec, than the camera. The codec is compressing to a square 1260×1080 to keep file sizes down. It is a fairly common codec practice.

So how does it magically go to proper HD playback? And how do editors handle the video to make it “standard” HD rez?

There is no such thing as STANDARD in HD.

Not true! There are many ‘standard’ forms of HD! Kind of like linux distributions. It’s enough to make you bleed from your ears.

“Many” and “Standard” don’t mix. NTSC SD has a standard of 720×486…29.97fps. That is the STANDARD. There is DV that came along at 720×480…29.97…but that wasn’t standard. And to deliver that to networks you’d have to capture as 720×486 to get rid of the 6 blank lines. Some people accept them, some do not. Needless to say, the SD standard is 720×486 29.97.

HD can be 720p 23.98, 29.97, 59.94 or 1080i or 1080p 23.98, 29.97 and 59.94. There is NO standard. Standards mean ONE SETTING….not multiple options.

That was my point. I was trying to be tongue in cheek. Let’s not even start on codecs, or I really will bleed from the ears.

There’s no tongue in cheek emoticon. Perhaps I should’ve used the winky one? 😉

do not forget 25p and 50i for the rest of the planet.

Actuality there are technically 17 standards for HD delivery worldwide.
