All right, I don’t give up very often, but this one stopped me dead in my tracks. Here’s the deal: I am doing some intensive green screen work (about 60 long clips so far). All in P2 720 24P.

Now, my workflow has always been to start keying all the clips that we plan on using with After Effects, export from AE in QT animation HD, do the edit, then link the original footage with the keyed version.

    Now here’s the issue:

It seems that AE doesn’t treat the audio from P2 the same way Premiere does, because upon re-linking I get an error in Premiere “The selected file cannot be linked because it has 2 audio channel(s) and the clip was created with one audio channel(s).”

    Any ideas, or alternate workflow?

    Thanks,

    Vince

Well, I guess I’m going to throw 30+ hours of uncompressed HD into Premiere. Let’s call it the stability test.

How about forgetting about relinking. Keep the original clips on the timeline (with audio), and place the AE’d clips (video only) on an upper track?

Thanks, I might have to do that at some point. I have about 8 hours of uncompressed 1080P some far, and it’s still playing realtime even with a fast blurred backdrop key and no rendering. That’s encouraging!

    Just so I understand…

Are you keying on the PPro timeline, then taking it to AE to tweak, or are you just editing the raw greenscreen shot and replacing it it with the keyed shot?

I usually leave audio out of any AE workflow I do…but otherwise maybe you could do an unlink/relink and not move the audio at all? just join the keyed video to the original audio…

    Hey Tim,

Unfortunately, no double system sound here with the limitted crew I had, so how can I unlink the video without the audio?

My workflow has almost always been to key the raw (usable)footage in AE before I get back in the studio with the client, since that allows me to show them keyed footage when I need to. When the edit is completed, I just relink everything else with the QT animation keys and all that’s left to do are some light wrap.

This footage was shot on an HPX 500, so it’s a little different from the Digibeta or even (yikes) DV keys we’ve done.

I think it stems from the fact that P2 uses 2 (or 4) seperate mono audio channels, which AE combines into into stereo single channel upon P2 import.

So when I go to link them back, Premiere is still looking for 2 seperate channels, and won’t accept the file.

So, I’m left with working with the uncompressed 1080P stuff in the timeline (seems to work fine so far, but I can see potential issues as the project become heavy)

If you can think of any other way, let me know.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Vince
