P2 First Time Up To Speed Fast
Posted by Mike K. kroesen on November 16, 2007 at 1:17 amHi this will be my first time using the P2 cards. Couple questions.
1. My MacBook Pro accepts 34mm ExpressCards. Is this port compatible with the 4GB P2 cards?
2. Will FCP 5.1.4 read P2 cards that have been recorded to with the 720p 24N setting. I heard it will extend the record time to upwards 9 minutes.
3. Is FCP 5.1.4 compatible with 4GB P2 cards? What is the best setting?
4. Any other gotcha’s or work flow issues I would want to know about in advance?
Thanks for any replies.
Cheers,
Mike

November 16, 2007 at 1:54 am1) No, not without an adaptor of sorts.
2) Yes. Be sure to download P2 drivers from panasonic.
3) Yes, there are no settings as after you record to P2, it’s just data at that point and you are basically doing a file transfer at that point.
4) You are going to need how figure out how to offload your p2 cards. It is best to have a p2 reader of some sort and preferably not use the camera or this. You should offload the cards to a hard drive and worry about importing to FCP later after the shoot. Having someone dedicated to help you do this is ideal. You shoot, they worry.

Thanks for the information. I need a clarification. Are the drivers I need to download from Panasonic, for the camera or for my computer?
If I hook a P2 Card reader into my computer via a USB 2 port and transfer to the footage to a external drive do I need to use FCP for that or does the P2 card just pop up as if it were an external drive?
Thanks,
Mike

November 16, 2007 at 11:54 amI don’t think there’s any “P2 readers” for USB. You need the DuelAdapter Cradle that goes PCMCIA->ExpressCard for the MBP.
You should use the free P2CMS software from Panasonic to do your transfers. (Make sure in Options that “compare” is on.)
Yes, P2 cards show up as drives.
DO NOT MESS WITH THE FILE/FOLDER NAMING AFTER TRANSFER! Bad Idea.

Your computer.

It pops up like a drive, if you have the drivers. The only USB reader I am aware of is the P2 store, if we have the time on set to actually do the transfer instead of offloading straight to the P2 store, I use the P2 store as the reader.
That’s why I was asking if you are renting as you should get a P2 store as well. It’s handy. I just wish it was bigger than 60GBs.
Bob mentions the Duel adapter which is good, but my storage is SATA and the Express-34 is taken up on my MacBook Pro by the SATA card. That’s why I use the P2 store as a reader.

November 16, 2007 at 5:57 pmNo worries, hopefully we got you up to speed fast enough.
Be patient. The P2 workflow is different than what you are used to (if you have shot a bunch of tape in the past). Once you get used to it, it’s great.
