    Hi Cow-ers:

Just wrapped a 24-day feature shot on the HVX at 720 24p. We shot 160 x 8 GB cards, ingested into my PowerBook G4 on set, without a flaw. The only minor niggly thing to keep in mind, is that towards the end of the shoot the ‘random’ file numbers generated by the camera began to duplicate themselves. Not many, but generally one per shoot day, and only on the last week of the shoot, or so. It could be because I was not using the Panasonic logging database tool, only the import function in FCP 6, that this was an issue. I suspect that the database software corrects for this occurrence.

Other than that, a trouble-free shoot. P2 rocks.

    Best, JIM.

So did you just rename the dupes?

Yes, I just added an ‘A’ after the name. A minor annoyance. But so much for ‘never the same name’ as I seem to recall reading in the P2 literature…

    Hi Peter:

Thanks for your response. THe film will be picture-locked by mid-March, so it will be awhile before there’s any footage available. Alt.Rec.Death was shot 1:1.85 on 35mm. Thanks for the compliment about it’s look. It’s even better on D-Beta…

What kind of projects do you work on? Perhaps we’ll bump into each other someday.

Hi Jim, I mainly producing short promo videos for Corporate and Government.
I have a Betacam D30 but I am thinking of buying the Panasonic 500 with the Fuji 2x lens, but I’m waiting for the 32 gig P2 cards.
    I have a FCP6 and Media100 edit suite.
I’m a Brit and came to Toronto in 1967 when I was 21 and landed on Yorkville. Worked for CBC CTV TVO spent time in Ottawa and went to Hollyweird where I was a film editor and a cinematographer.
I was also a DOP on Commercials and a Director on low budget features and TV shows.
Do you ever go to the FCP Toronto User group meetings?
    Cheers
    Peter

Congrats Jim! I did the same about a month ago, we shot multiple camera’s, 8 and 16 gig cards over a months shoot with zero issue. We handled our numbering differently so we didn’t experience any problems there. I’m into heavy vfx work now and the footage holds up to heavy manipulation well.

Now the question is would you use the camera again or move to one of it’s bigger brothers? I’m Directing another feature in early 08 and faced with this issue; I have to say I’m sold on the P2 all the way.

    Best of luck finishing.

    Hey Michael:

Thanks for your response, and congrats on your feature too! I’m curious exactly how you handled your P2 imports (I suspect you had/created some form of database for this?). As far as the HVX goes, I’d definitely shoot with it again, but if budget permitted, I’d probably go for a higher-grade camera — particularly one with interchangeable glass — preferably one that could accommodate 35mm primes…

But P2 as a format is pretty darn ‘solid’. (nice not to need a VTR to ingest too…) Best of luck with completion of your feature, and with your new one in ’08.

    JIM.
