Does PPro crash with large P2 files?

Just upgraded our systems to cs5.5 – They all crash when playing P2 AVCIntra 100mbs files larger than 4gb. Tested on three different PC’s and any P2 file that is larger than the base 4gb crashes PPro 5.5 while scrubbing through timeline – but the same files work fine on those same PC’s while in PPro 5.0.

Its been 12 days since i last spoke with Adobe tech support (no surprise there – they were going to get right back to us while raising the case to tier 2 support) – and seemingly wasted 14 hours over three days with them prior to that.

Also, understanding the P2 file structure, do your video files within PPro show the full amount of all the files within a clip? or should it just show as 4gb?? — when, in this case, most are 20 -30gb. Both our 5.0 and 5.5 sytems show 4gb even if there are more.

Thanks for any input or quick testing anyone might do on this?

    Hi Matt,

You did not mention Mac or PC? Make sure you use the Media Browser panel to import the files, also only import files from the Video folder, not the entire content folder.

The other solution, if you upgraded over the previous version, could be using the Adobe Cleaner Tool, then do a fresh install.

Footage on P2 cards is always broken into 4GB files because the card format (FAT) is limited to 4GB files. If you use the Media Browser, Premiere will recreate the full files (Spanning) if they were over 4GB.

Thanks for the reply Vince. All three were PC’s. All used the browser to import. Yes, I am up on the 4gb fat P2 file structure – though its been an a topic during tech supprt as to whether or not the clip info should show as the technically correct 4gb – or should it show the total of all spanned files making up that clip?

It should show the total once imported. Are you saying all three machines are exhibiting the exact same behavior?

Yes all three, different builds, crash the same way.

And all three show just the 4gb with P2. Sony shows more.

Are you using a P2 reader, or straight from the camera? Do you have the latest P2 drivers. Pretty much out of ideas, I do this a pretty regular basis with no issues…

    Matt,
Where I work, we also do this on a regular basis. I choose the
AVC_Intra 100 template for my timeline. We have Matrox MX02 boxes and software installed. Quite honestly, I have experienced a lot of problems with using matrox preset timelines. Lots of freezes, simple effects like dissolves would not work, or would just go to black. When I make a non matrox timeline in the same project, no problem.
Also, I choose a lower resolution for my viewer window while scrubbing.
Hope this helps in some way.
