  • P2 directly into Powerbook slot?

Posted by Bob Roberts on December 14, 2006 at 4:44 pm

Has anyone tried downloading P2 information by directly inserting the card into a Powerbook G4 slot? If so, please share the experience.

    Thanks in advance.

The best way is to move the contents of the card to another hard drive, and them import it to FCP. If you import straight to FCP, you might have some issues. It’s best to make backups of all your cards anyway as that’s your original media. The resulting quicktime movies are expendable. Also, be sure to drag the lastclip.txt file first, and then the contents folder. The transfer will go a little faster that way.

We recently purchased P2 Genie and use it onsite with our Powerbook and it works fantastic. P2 Genie gives you the ability to offload to two separate driver simultaneously. A definite must for working with the challenging P2 media.

    Thanks for mentioning that.

P2 Genie is quite an awesome little app.

After ejecting P2 media you also need to power off the card,
icon up near the audio and monitor icons.

Yes – I used to wonder why people advised me to do that then I started ejecting P2 cards from my powerbook and everything would go wacky or I would get a message saying I needed to restart. After ejecting the mounted card from your desktop you then need to go to the upper right hand side of your desktop and power off the pcmia card slot. Search this over at DV info and you will hear the same.

I never knew. I wondered why I’d have to restart after about every 5th card or so. It has been a while since I worked with P2 footage.

    Thank you izone. Nice tip.

I can only second this. I used to have the same problem until I got that info and made it a habit. Never had to do it with other cards (like CF-card adapters), but the icon was always there.
