    Hey there,

I’m running FCP 6.0 on a 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4 Powerbook. I’m attempting to ingest some footage shot on P2 and then copied to an external drive. I’m having trouble with some of the cards as in the CONTENTS folder, the following subfolders are non-existent: CLIP, ICON, PROXY and VOICE. FCP is, not surprisingly, not recognizing the cards as a valid structure without these subfolders. (The LASTCLIP.TXT document is also missing on one of the card folders, but I have been able to successfully log and transfer without it in the past.) The .MXF files in the AUDIO and VIDEO folders are present though… is there any way to salvage this media without those other subfolders?

Also, I’m having some trouble with what appear to be corrupted files on cards WITH the correct structure. In the Log and Transfer Window, many clips have large portions without audio or video- just a grey screen. I try to select only the good portions of the clips to log and transfer, but FCP cuts me off at the hop. Has anyone had a similar problem and been able to force FCP to transfer the media?

    Cheers,
    Aynsley

As for part one…if you are missing those other folders your only option are third party solutions. Raylight, Calibrated and MXF4QT all allow you to deal with the MXF files directly in FCP…and all they need are the VIDEO and AUDIO folders. I suggest one of those options.

As for part 2…are you sure that is not also a result of poor P2 file structure management? I have never seen what you describe on a fully offloaded P2 card.

Whoever shot this and gave you this footage need to know how to do things right. Have them watch my tutorial on the P2 Workflow with FCP 6. Please note that instead of using the finder to copy the footage, that it would be best to have software like Shotput P2 copy the footage off, as it verifies the data. This software came out after I made the demo.

The full card structure needs to be intact. But, as I said, if not, then resort to those third party solutions. They all work. And some are cheaper than the others.

Thanks so much for the great and speedy advice! I’ll definitely look into those third party solutions.

As for problem #2, a lot of this footage was salvaged off a drive that bit the dust (no backup). I think that is likely the reason for the wonky media. Though I guess there is a chance that the solution for my 1st problem might also work for the 2nd. Probably not too likely, but possible.

And I appreciate your sympathy. It’s definitely not ideal to receive media like this! Though I myself didn’t know about Shotput P2 and wish more people did! Thanks for the tip, and the link to your demo!

    Cheers,
    Aynsley
