P2 Clips out to tape 23.98?
I put a bunch of P2 720P 23.98 clips on my Raid and brought them into FCP 6.0.1. They all run at 23.98 fps. I have them strung out into 23.98 sequences in 30 minute chunks with continuous time code so I can output them to tape. I have the AJ 1200A with no firewire option. I can crash record on the deck and get the footage to output with a pretty close match to timecode but it is running at 29.97 on the tape….still it seems to synch up except I have 29.97 fps on the tape and 23.98 on the timeline.
Since I cannot assemble edit from FCP because I don’t have the AJ1400 or a firewire option, a crash record with play on the timeline seems to be the only way I can at least get a close timecode match to the original clips.
Is there a way to get the tape to record 23.98? When I set the deck’s menu to 23/24 system clock I get a flashing memu item….it is ok with 59/60.
Any thoughts?

The deck always records @ 59.94 frames per second. And since FCP will not send the RP188 data BACK to the deck, you are hosed. Buy a couple of drives and back up digitally. Tape is soooooooo 2005. ;-D

Interestingly enough the timecode seems to track even with the sequence playing out at 23.98 and the deck recording 29.97. So if I get approximate timecodes for a sound bite at least I can digitize the clip because the seconds will be very close and we add handles anyway.

The timecode will track, yes, but you won’t be able to get back to 23.98. Your clips are now 59.94 with no flags.

Is there a DVCPRO-HD deck anywhere that can record just 23.98? Or Does Panasonic consider all decks to be “broadcast formats” only?

It’s not DVCPro HD it’s the SMPTE 720p60 spec. The spec lists 59.94 (60p) and 720p23.98 is only an intermediate format that we can edit/process. It’s the same principle as 24p within NTSC, you have to record it within the spec which is 29.97 even tough you can edit @ 23.98. When you monitor 23.98 footage in 720p or NTSC you are watching the footage with pulldown put back in by the Kona/Final Cut at either 59.94p or 29.97i.

Right. Thanks for that info. But I thought I had heard about a HDCam or D-5 tape that recorded pure 23.98. So I thought Panasonic might do this as well on a high end deck.

“They already do in the D5 (it’s a Panasonic format) but it records @ 1080p23.98 among other formats (D5 also records @ 720p60). SMPTE recognizes 1080p23.98 as a deliverable so that’s why there’s decks that can record it. With a Kona3 (or ioHD) you can take your 720p23.98 timeline and cross convert it to 1080p23.98 for mastering to D5 or HDCam SR with a click of a button with great results.
