I’m seriously considering the HVX-200. Is getting footage into a Mac as simple as sticking a P2 card into the PCMCIA slot on a Powerbook G4 and copying the files to an external drive? If so, why would anyone spend $1200 on a P2Store? Also, are there certain Powerbooks with PCMCIA slots that WON’T read P2? I read somewhere that a Powerbook will take a P2 but not the newer Macbook Pro. Finally, are the 16GB P2 cards as compatible as the 8MB cards provided I have the latest drivers and versions of OSX and FCP? Thanks.

[gregstrange] “Is getting footage into a Mac as simple as sticking a P2 card into the PCMCIA slot on a Powerbook G4 and copying the files to an external drive?”

Yup…that easy. I have one and use it all the time.

[gregstrange] “If so, why would anyone spend $1200 on a P2Store?”

Because it is really easy to have this thing sitting on a table by the production tent, or strapped to your belt and you pull a card out, put it into this and press one button…offload. Press another…erase. Eject, move on. It would be difficult to have to lug a laptop and external hard drive around on certain locations or types of shoots. There are different workflows for P2…and each is legitimate. I can say that I have used all but the Firestore or CitiDisk options.

[gregstrange] “Also, are there certain Powerbooks with PCMCIA slots that WON’T read P2?”

Nope…they all do. Provided you load the P2 driver onto them, and they are running OSX 10.4 or higher. OH…all the NEWER mac Laptops…the MacBook Pros…DON’T HAVE PCMCIA SLOTS…they are PCI Express 34…so that is another reason people use P2 Store or other options…because finding a Powerbook is tough. Or, they get the Duel Systems PCMCIA>Express 34 adapter and away they go!

[gregstrange] “I read somewhere that a Powerbook will take a P2 but not the newer Macbook Pro.”

Oh..I just answered that above. Correct…Express34 slots…duel systems adapter is the answer.

Thanks Shane. On the PC front, I suppose it’s just as easy. Any cheap PC with a PCMCIA slot and an external drive hooked up and it’s drag and drop?

Yep. The first shoot we were on we had a Sony Viao on the set. Next shoot, the Powerbook…and the last shoot, the P2 Store.

Once we used the P2 Store…we never stopped.

Totally- I think both the laptop and P2 Store have their merits. P2 is a bit more robust, compact and easy to see if a copy truly completed. But a laptop allows you to review footage and eve edit- which is nice. We go over both workflows on my disc.
