p2 card recovery- after format?
Posted by Tvhead on February 11, 2007 at 2:45 pmOk so I did something stupid today.
We were using the p2 gennie and found out that the gennie doesn’t tell you that your hard drive is full- so a card that was being copied didn’t really copy and I formatted the card, but didn’t record any new information on them.
Is there a way to recover this information- like you would a hard drive or flash card?
Help please- I suppose I am not the first- but I would really like an answer on where to turn.
Thanks-

February 11, 2007 at 2:55 pmI have not heard of anyone doing this successfully but I notice you use a Mac and so you may wish to explore Disk Warrior, as it has been known to work many miracles in the past — though as I said, I have not heard of it being used in conjunction with P2 cards.
Write their tech support line and ask if it works on P2 cards. I am not sure if it does or doesn’t.
Someone else may have a real answer here but at pre-7am on a Sunday morning, this is where I’d start looking…
Best regards,

February 11, 2007 at 3:24 pmI did some research on the P2 Genie website, and found out that you’re not actually the first.
https://www.p2genie.com/forum/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=22
The last person it happened to did a post on the P2 Genie website forum, but nobody ever responded to his post.
What’s also very mysterious is that there’s no support or contact info on the P2 Genie website, as if they really don’t want to be bothered.
It would seem to me that the best shot might be a data recovery business if something like DiskWarrior does not work. It would make sense that DiskWarrior might be able to help, because it rebuilds the file directory from what’s actually located on the disk. It also allows you to preview what content it found before it replaces the directory. That sounds like a reasonable first step. If you can get the P2 to mount as a drive on the computer, you should be able to use DiskWarrior.

February 11, 2007 at 4:14 pmI haven’t made that mistake yet (although its probably just a matter of time) so I can’t give you any advice other than perhaps directly writing Andrew – the creator of P2 Genie.
The reason I say this is that on two occassions I have had problems with P2 Genie sending the contents of the P2 Store to my internal harddrive (of my MacBookPro) instead of the external (as was specified via P2 Genie DESTINATION window.) The result was that the internal harddrive runs out of memory (of course) and you have to start the transfer again.
HOWEVER firstly you want to erase the contents from your internal drive – BUT you cannot find the path/ folder where it is stored (i.e. they are invidible/ hidden.)
So I wrote Andrew directly about this issue and he was VERY HELPFUL and prompt in his reply. He sent to me an application called “Get Hidden Volumes” and I found the missing volumes easily thru that – trashed them from the internal drive and all is fine.
I relate this story for two reasons:
1. Andrew was helpful to me in my issue – maybe he will be helpful to you in yours.
2. In case anyone else enounters this ‘hidden volumes’ problem they could read this a hopefully find a solution.
and yes I agree P2 Genie forum isn’t well atteneded maybe cuz mosty people prefer to come here instead.

February 11, 2007 at 4:39 pmI actually did email Anders today about this issue. He is aware of the problem, and said there is a free update coming around NAB.
“The free P2 genie v1.5 update is scheduled for NAB, which includes MD5 checksum verify, and better error logic.”
However, I still take issue with this problem not being made known to people who buy the software. Seems to me this is a pretty big bug to leave out there for people to find on their own given what can be lost. Frankly I think this should have been a “feature” before it was ever released.

February 12, 2007 at 6:38 pmHi,
a few days ago, I got a mail from imagine products. Once I bought P2 log for my Final Cut. They announced an upgrade with repair functions for P2 media. Maybe this can also help.

February 21, 2007 at 7:47 pmi just read one of your posts at creative cow
I have a bit of an emergency
the card or the p2 sotre that we used this past weekend either wrote over or “lost footage” that we had shot.
I was not working alone , I was only shooting so I do not know exactly where to problem occured and my AC was not very organized.
we had an error occur on the P2 store, the battery became loose while we were downloading a card
we have the same cards footage in the store 3 times one from the error and 2 that are fine
eitherA) after the card was reinserted it wrote over or misplaced other footage that was already in the store. and for whatever reason doubled the same volume?
or
B) my AC messed up and put the same card in the p2 store twice ( 1 time the battery fell off and then 1 time it was successfully stored and yet another time it was successfully store.) and then handed me back this card that had not yet been downloaded..and then I reformated it thinking that it had already been saved
its all very confusing ..bottom line is that we are missing one whole card worth of footage
do you know..or is there anyboday i could contact about recovering the data..i have 2 days befor i have to return this equip
thanks so much for taking the time to read this
please email me directly

February 23, 2007 at 11:41 amHi I’m Anders, the person referenced as Andew in this thread. I’ll just chime in and try to help out here.
I’m sorry that anyone has lost data using my utility. This is very unfortunate.
I don’t always offer support for the free tryout version. But I sure do whenever I have the time.
Every registered user of the utility receives an email from me when they purchase. This tells them how to download the program and a few things you have to be aware of. This of cause also gives them my company email, which they can use as a support hotline. I have to this day ALWAYS responded to every retested user in a prompt fashion to support them.
There have been occasions where the email address provided by the customer, due to aggressive spam filtering has been unable to be reached, but that is on rare occasions.Note that the email address is also in the “About” menu and the Splash screen of P2 Genie, so it’s not like we try to hide ourselves. I dont have my email address on the homepage because I believe that would be an invitation to spam, and really redundant as you should have it in the program anyway.
As much as Mr. Tomchak thinks I suck, I did actually support my customers. Primary support is thru mail though.
And please, if anyone has problems with my software or my business practices, please drop me a mail, because out of over 400 registered users, only an amazingly small amount have expressed the same negative feelings as is expressed here by Mr. Tomchank.

February 23, 2007 at 2:30 pmAnders, I never once said “you suck”, and don’t appreciate you saying otherwise. If you are going to quote somebody, at least be accurate.
I did point out where I thought it was a problem that finding your contact info is difficult, and I also think not making people aware of the shortcomings of an otherwise good product is wrong. It puts people and their projects (and sometimes big money) at risk. This was evident with a posting on your own forum months ago as I already pointed out, and then again here with this one.
The sole purpose of your product is to successfully transfer media from one place to another, and it lacks the ability to tell you when the drive is full. I’m sorry, but that’s a HUGE deal when that’s the only point of your software in the first place.
If you’re going to put a product out for public use, you should be more open to getting feedback that is not always good. One of the best ways to grow your user base is to address concerns of users, not battle them.
I think it’s also important to realize that the person who buys the program, is not always the person who uses it, this would not receive this extra contact info you’re talking about. In this particular case, a producer purchased your product and gave her laptop to the photographer to use on the shoot. This laptop will be used with other photographers as well. So in this case, because there’s no info on the website, and none in the manual, they would have no way for the photographer to know how to get in touch with you if they have a problem. Sure, there’s the splash screen that you mentioned, but how many people honestly read a splash screen to find tech support? It’s just not standard practice, so nobody would naturally think to look there.
You don’t have to agree with me, but I’m not the only one that feels this is a major shortcoming. You are entitled to your own opinion though, just as I am.
