P2 card reader
Posted by Paul Cronley on March 20, 2009 at 6:35 pmCan I use a Dual Systems DS-DP-0001 to transfer footage from a P2 card? If so, what are the pros and cons?

March 21, 2009 at 1:18 amIf you have a MacBook Pro you can. All pros no cons. Shotput Pro is also a great addition to offload P2 cards.

March 21, 2009 at 6:07 pmWell I wouldn’t say no cons exactly. Search google for problems folks have with Duel Adapters and you’ll find plenty. When it works, works great. But by no means 100% compatible.

March 22, 2009 at 4:30 amTrue but I’ve got Lexar and Sandisk CF and SDHC card readers that have zero problems at all. The Duel routinely causes system lockups or just fails completely. Sure no tech is perfect but in this case it’s at the lower end of reliability.

March 22, 2009 at 6:47 amNext to a 1st generation DVR, my Duel Adapter is the most unreliable piece of hardware it’s ever been my frustration to use.
I have found that when it becomes unreliable, a quick to and fro of the Mac/PC switch on the underside gets it going again. -

March 22, 2009 at 8:49 amAll my tests on many various PC card readers with the PPC and Intel Mac, has led me to believe most issues are based with-in the Mac OS Software, hardware is just that, hardware , Software is ever changing, you just get a 99% stable set-up and whammo, Apple brings out another up-date instalment that promises to be more reliable/stable/useable etc.
It never ends, and is never 100% stable.

March 22, 2009 at 10:54 pmHello Erich,
Not exactly Hell, These still early days of P2 remind me of when we first began in Non-Linear editing back in the early 90’s, it took some time for the bugs and hardware to be sorted, we have all seen huge advances but there is still some way to go.
Cheers

March 22, 2009 at 11:32 pmTotally agree, still it would be good to have the option of a reliable cost effective 2 slot P2 reader for use in the field via 1394a/b or even eSata via the express slot. The PDC 20/35 is a good studio solution, but FW bus power is needed in most of the field situations I have found myself in.
I always felt that a dumbed down version of the P2 store should have been in the early product release too. Something that didn’t have an internal HDD or the recording functions (even screen), and could work in isolation with Laptops and external HDD’s.
