  • P2 card maintenance?

Posted by Chris Bell on September 19, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Is there any maintenance I need to do with my P2 cards? I just finished a shoot where we had a dozen or so clips which were corrupted. I can’t find any rhyme or reason to explain the problem. It worries me, though. I can’t have unreliable gear.

Is there something I should be doing beyond erasing the cards when they’re full?

    Advice welcome.

No maintenance is necessary, though you can reformat the cards in the camera.

Is this your first use of the cards? Did both cards have corrupted clips? Was there anything that happened with the camera that might have caused the corruption (for example, being plugged in as opposed to running off batteries)? I’m thinking of any minor power surge that might not have been noticeable.

Could someone have accidentally partially ejected the cards during shooting or pulled the wrong one out of the camera while the camera was on?

Also how are you doing your transfers- often times the errors creep in with unverified copying from P2 rather than on the cards themselves which are about as bulletproof as you can get.

I transfered the p2 media to a P2 store… so I suppose the error could have occurred there.

I’ve owned an HVX since its introduction… can’t say I use it much as I prefer my Varicam. Never the less, it must be reliable and I am concerned that I had so many unusable clips.

Does the P2 store require maintenance?

Okay, let me ask the big question: do you use a Mac?

Before you make any manner of decision of whether the clips are corrupt or not, please remove FCP/Mac from the equation. Plug the P2 Store into a Windows computer and view the files on P2 Viewer or P2CMS. I’d bet a nickel that your files are fine, and that any errors or corruption is due to the Mac issues once again.

What is causing you to think the files are corrupted? What are you using to view the clips? Are you using FCP to import the clips, if so what version? Back in FCP v5 there was a setting in FCP that you needed to set if you shot 24pn. Otherwise it would appear that FCP wouldn’t import your clip and tell you it’s corrupted, when in fact it’s not. We need more info.

    Barry,

I’ve been offloading P2 cards for the last year using P2 Log (Imagine Products) and my Powerbook G4, without a single problem. What’s the issue?

    Barry,

No access to a windows computer. I think the issue is with my P2 store.

As long as you write-protect the cards before putting them in the computer, there is no issue. But if you put them in unprotected, then there’s a very small chance that some frames will get corrupted at random points, during the transfer.
