Greetings all , I ‘ve been following the progress of this camera and the work you folks are doing with it since NAB. Question I have , have any of you just recorded plain dv to tape? Asking because one of my clients does not reguire hd at this moment Also am I to understand correctly I could record hd to the cards, save the data to my laptop and still down convert the material to tape right in the camera ? Or I could just plain record dv stright to dv tape in the camera. How would you compare regular dv shot to tape with this camera compared to other cameras ?

Thank you all for your time and wealth of information on this forum

To answer your question about your client not needing HD, the P2 cards capture resolutions other than just HD which will be better than regular DV (for example DVPro50), which is the only resolution you can record onto the tape. So if only from that angle, your client will end up with a better picture.

When you record to tape with this camera, you’re recording using DV. There is no option for better resolution.

If I understand your question correctly, you cannot record HD to the cards, save it to your laptop and then transfer the HD resolution to the tape. The tape is just for DV, so you’d downgrade the picture dramatically.

It’s pretty easy to work with HD- and the client can know that whatever they shoot today will still be usable in 5 years when hopefully HD is the norm. And a downconvert to SD from 720p looks great.

The DV footage from the HVX200 looks great compared to a DVX100. I find a noticeable clarity shooting regular DV, probably due to the better optics. The only tradeoff is that the cameras low light performance is not as good as a DVX100. I find downconverting HD in camera to DV looks even better, if you have the time to do this at 1x. It’s great to be able to put something on a DV tape that was shot in HD at 60frames slow-motion! Good luck!
