P2 backup solution
Hi to all P2 Clip owners –
We are on a three years project with a lot of P2 data from our HPX3000 Camera. Right now we are searching for a solution for long term backup. I have just been on IBC and no solution available. We are thinking about Final Cut Server to convert HD to SD and Backup of the imported FCP Movs to Ultrium Streamer – one of the biggest problems is the re-logging of the clips with a simple edl – we need to translate the edl clip list to our ultrium backup solution which seems close to impossible. Anyone working with any solution or working for a solution already ? problem is no open sdk for prof. backup solutions available – if anyone is interesed in sharing a solution – please let me know –

DLT or LTO data tape backup. Banks have been using that format for 30+ years. And some formats of DLT or LTO are MXF aware, meaning that if you want to pull a specific card or shot, the software can locate that and recover only that.
Or you can look at the DROBO. Ads on the sides of the COW all over.

thanks for your reply – I have asked many people and no backup solution which I know has the ability to locate P2 mxf files via EDL – can you name any ?

QUANTUM SDLT600a. That one is MXF aware. Not via EDL…not sure what you mean by that. But the software can locate the MXF files you are looking for.

We currently use a Quantum LTO3a for back up of all the P2 generated by our HPX 3000, as well as all project files, music, graphics, and in some instances the QT files generated through Log and Transfer.
We too have projects that have a long gestation period, a lot of these projects overlap so having separate tape drives makes tracking the project easy. It is not a fast process in comparison with HDD storage, but it certainly is much safer, as was mentioned in a previous post this means of back up has been used by other business sectors for many years. All of the backing up, and even retrieval, happens as a background event so it effects none of the editing operations, it can even be performed over a closed network from a separate computer.
At this stage we find his solution to be best for us, it offers flexibility, security, and ease of use.
