I am new to working with 24p footage in After Effects and want to make sure I get this right. Some help from you veterans would be appreciated. I have two questions:

    Question 1:
My client sent me a copy of his p2 content using a Panasonic HVX200. I noticed I can work with the raw MXF files right into AE. Is this the best workflow? Or should I export a Quicktime through Premiere and work with that? I noticed the comp size defaults to 960 X 720 but looks slightly stretched vertically.

    Question 2:
What would be the best render settings for a 24p project? I am adding no animations. Just compositing two shots together. Do I introduce pulldown?

    Any advice would be appreciated
    Thanks,
    Aaron

Question 1: I think you’re okay working direct with MXF files in AE. Just make sure segmented clips are coming in in their entirety. Also, P2 is not full raster, meaning even though the resolution is 960×720 (4:3), it is meant to be displayed as 16:9. If you toggle the pixel aspect ratio in your comp window, you should notice it stretch back out to 16:9.

Question 2: What you render out to will depend entirely on your edit. If you’re cutting at 24p (23.976), then render out at 23.976 progressive. The only time you should introduce pulldown is if you’re going to a 29.97 timeline.

Follow-up question. Do I render the clip out at its native size of 960X720 or do I render it at 1280 X 720?

    Thanks again,
    A

Personally, I like to render out full raster (1280×720). Final Cut Pro will know what to do with it.
