overall filter/mask
Posted by Carlo G on June 19, 2006 at 1:45 pmIn an avid system you can drop a filter on a blank video layer above all others to affect those below -ie. a widescreen mask. In this way there is a uniform look to the whole piece. Is there any way to achieve this with FCP. (using5.0.4)

June 19, 2006 at 1:57 pmFCP does not use filler. For the most part, it makes things easier. You have to think a little differently.
Nest the entire sequence and apply the widescreen filter to the nest.
Duplicate the sequence first to retain an “un-nsested” version of the sequence, if you like.

June 19, 2006 at 2:11 pmif it;s a WS mask in particular you want,
i prefer to create on in Photoshop, and place that on a tack above the other clips.
makes it easier to re-frame the shots, if needed.2 lengths of slug, cropped of moved in to place, will do the same,
but it;s not as neat looking 🙂cheers,

“Or place a slug clip in the video track above and add Video Filter > Matte > Mask Shape, adjusted to the size you want.

June 19, 2006 at 3:09 pmIn FCP this works only for so-called ‘generators’. These generators create a separate video track which can be placed above all other video layers, whereas Apple’s ‘Widescreen Mask’ >filter< can only be applied to individual clips. (Realtime) mask generators are contrained in 'Joe's Filters 3.5' or 'Eureka Plugins v5' for instance. Both are commercial packages ($99 and $49). At least there are demo versions so you can try and decide if the functionality you want is worth the price (the mask generator is only a part of the functionality of both plugins sets - they offer many other effects, too) https://www.joesfilters.com/
