Here’s a strange one. I’ve been trying to export a 1080i DVCPro HD sequence as a digital file for playback on a PC, either via QT using H.264 or Sorensen 3, or via Windows Media Video through the Flip4Mac plug-in. In all 3 cases I have had the same bizarre problem. For each of the 3 codecs, I run a few brief tests (5 to 55 secs) that play back fine on both my G5 and on my two PCs. But then, for each codec, I’ve tried to do a longer clip. If the clip is over a minute long, the file plays back OK on the Mac but not on the PC. QT Player or Windows Media Player says it can’t read the file. Then to make things more bizarre, when I go back to trying to encode a brief test again, THOSE NEW BRIEF FILES WON’T PLAY BACK ON THE PC EITHER!!!! But the files I encoded before I encoded the long one continue to play back fine.

This exact same thing has happened with each of the 3 codecs in succession. Each starts out fine with the brief tests, but then I try a longer encode that won’t play back on the PC. After that, when I try to do another brief encode just like the one that worked originally, this new one won’t work either, no matter how short it is.

I’m sure I’m confusing you. Just to simplify, here is the sequence of events with one of the codecs, H.264:
    1. I encode a 10-sec test that plays back fine on the G5 and on my PCs.
    2. I encode a 50-sec test that plays back fine on the G5 and on my PCs.
    3. I encode a minute-long test that plays back fine on the G5, but when I try to play it back on my PCs, I get “Error 2048 – The file is not a movie file.”
    4. I now try to encode a 10-sec test of the same material using the same settings as in Step 1.
    5. This and all subsequent tests play back on the G5 but get the error message on the PC.
    6. I try a short test with an entirely different sequence (this one 720p/60)and I get the same error message on the PC.

I have a Quad G5 with FCP 5.0 and QT 7.0.3. I think I better try upgrading to FCP 5.1.1 and QT 7.1.3. Maybe that will fix it. But I really do wonder why this thing is happening in the first place
    Thanks

I’ve sometimes had trouble if I overwrite a Quicktime file with a new one. Are you giving each of the encodes a unique name or are you overwriting old files? This may make a difference. May not, though.
