I have a job that I’m just about to start and the end result has to be output to DigiBeta, 29.97, Non-drop.
It’s a 4 minute character animation that will originate in AfterEffects and then move over to FCP for sound and some editing, etc.
My question is: How do I set up my composition and project settings so that I have no problems later. Things such as resolution, pixels, square or rectangle and such. I am considering the ANIMATION codec, but I just don’t know. All my experience thus far is outputting to Mini-DV.

    Thanks for your help,
    Kenn

The person you want to please is your FCP editor, who will be responsible for recording to DigiBeta. Ask the editor what his/her FCP sequence settings will be for the project.

Calling the editor is a good idea.

In case you need to get started, the basics are:
    D1 720×486 .9 aspect ratio

The big question is whether to render interalced or frames. We tend to frame render almost everything frames except for scrolling titles.

    Best of luck.

I can’t call the editor, because the editor is me! Hahaha…
I’ve been editing since FCP 1, but like I said previously, everything was always mini-dv.
It’s seems I’m moving up a bit into an area that I’m not that sure about.
Again, the finished product needs to be on Digi-Beta, 29.97, Non-drop with 4 audio tracks. 2 for Vocal Narration, one for sound effects, one for the score.
Since I can’t afford a digibeta deck I was gonna output a finished MOV out of FCP and bring it to a transfer house in NYC.
So my problems are basically setting up my AE comps, which you’ve already answered, and how would I set up my FCP sequences and then how would I encode it?

The whole project is painted artwork that’s in different photoshop layers. That’s why I figured the animation codec would be fine. The end result, on my client’s side, is just going on to DVD’s.

    Thanks!

I think you know what my answer would be … 🙂

Call the transfer house. You should match the settings of whatever NLE they are using to output to DigiBeta. Blackmagic codec? Avid codec? Animation codec? It’s up to them.
