outputting to 16×9
Posted by Daniel Schultz on May 28, 2013 at 8:47 pmI’m in a 1080/23.97 project and I want to export to 16×9 in SD (Long video, and I don’t want the file to be too big).
When I export HD/full resolution, it comes out fine.
But anytime I choose an SD resolution, the quicktime squeezes to 4/3 aspect ratio.I’ve tried various resolutions, checking and unchecking many different boxes in the export settings, and still 4:3.
Any thoughts?

May 28, 2013 at 9:34 pmWhat’s your intended delivery format? NTSC Standard Def is 4:3 only. PAL is 16:9…but NTSC, 4:3 only. There are 4:3 Anamorphic formats, but then it’s squeezed and need to have a player that unsqueezes it. Or there’s 4:3 letterbox.

May 28, 2013 at 9:57 pmOr DVD programs like Encore will take a QT Ref from Avid and “flag it” and you will have a widescreen DVD – but as Shane says the player much read that flag to play out 16×9 (most players do that).
For web/computer applications you can send the QT Ref. to Sorenson Squeeze and force the aspect ratio to playback 16×9 — like 640×360 might be considered “SD” (SD size)on a video file.

May 28, 2013 at 10:26 pmHi.
My intended delivery is web (using Brightcove video server).
The video players are all 16/9 aspect ratio, and they do accept HD.
But because this is over an hour long speech, (and for web-playing purposes, HD is not so important on this piece), I usually downres the output to lower res. I always did that in FCP export for quicktime conversion. This would give me several widescreen resolutions to choose from, and they always would playback in widescreen. So now I’m using AVID and the quicktime options look pretty much the same as FCP. But then the output is squeezed to 4/3.
I have the academic version of AVID, so I don’t think I have Sorensen Squeeze or Encore.
Does that answer your questions and give a sense of what I’m trying to do?
Thanks, Dan

May 28, 2013 at 10:37 pmMake a custom Quicktime export.
Choose Quicktime Movie.
Video and Audio (if you want video and audio).
Under Video Format choose height and width 864×486 16:9 Square Pixel.
Display Aspect Ratio – 16:9 square pixel (864×486).This should give you an SD, unsqueezed 16:9 video.

May 28, 2013 at 11:20 pmWhy not just change the format tab to 23.967 NTSC, and then export a custom 16:9 frame? 864×486, 640×360, etc.

May 29, 2013 at 12:15 pmOkay, I tried changing the format to 23.97/NTSC.
Set the pixel ratio to be 853 x480 (set to custom, not “same as source”).
Tried outputting once using the 16:9 square pixel (853 x 480) and once using Native Dimensions (853 x 480) and it still comes out squeezed to 4:3.
Did I miss something?

May 29, 2013 at 1:43 pmI would output the reference movie and download mpeg streamclip. Its free, and will allow you to force a frame size on the quicktime it creates. I’m actually doing an SD project right now that is all 16:9 and has many quicktime approvals going out. I use reference and Squeeze, but there is no reason Streamclip won’t do the same thing.

May 31, 2013 at 12:38 amYeah. You did miss something.
You have to change the size and puxel aspect in the QuickTime codec dialog (press the size button), as well as in the main Avid Export dialog.
