  • Outputting 720/24p for HD Broadcast in the US & Europe .:. 24P vs 30P

I’m shooting 720/24p with an HMC-150. All the footage will be edited in a 23.98 timeline.

This is for both HD broadcast in the US and PAL broadcast in Europe.

Will the outputs/mastering be problematic in any way… It is essential that this has the ‘film look’ (also shooting with 35 adapter and primes)

I have read a lot about 24 vs 30P – it seems it is a workflow thing. We have already shot some stuff in 24. Could make the switch to 30P if it will be a problem for a broadcast master (both in the US and Europe)

I would also like to include some slow motion. Should I shoot that at 720/60p then import directly into 23.98 timeline – or is there a conversion I need to do — or a better way to get slo-mo — It seems the 24p slo mo isn’t ideal…

    thanks.

    Jared,
If you are shooting 24p for the ‘film look’, forget it.
the DOF will give you the film look, as well as a zillion other things.
Added pulldown is a trick that has been invented to convert film to NTSC video, and has nothing to do with a theatre experience.

Also, forget about pulldown in PAL. The whole idea behind 24P in video is to:
a: be able to go to Film without speed change (except the 23.976 to 24)
b: be able to go to NTSC with pulldown
c: be able to go to PAL with a slight speedup (24 to 25)

If you are going to add 30 fps to the mix, you need a very expensive / difficult / quality loosing conversion.
(Especially the mix will make things very hard)

Don’t do it, stick to 24 and play out @ 25 to Pal
